Headmaster Baker, Lady Mae, and Scott stood at the front of the classroom. "Good morning, ladies! Headmaster Baker has a very special announcement for everyone," said Lady Mae in a loud and cheerful voice.
Baker cleared her throat and began, "Thank you, Lady Mae. I'd like to introduce you all to Sophie Campbell. She is here from Canada as part of her exchange program and will be attending classes at Arbury until February. I expect you all to make her feel welcomed here."
Scott's heart sank as he heard Baker refer to him as a "she" and "Sophie." Confusion and embarrassment washed over him as he wondered why she would call him by a girl's name. He knew he had agreed to wear the uniform and go by the name Sophie, but he didn't expect the headmaster to announce it in front of the entire class.
"I understand going by Sophie, but why is Baker calling me a she?" Scott thought to himself. His mind raced with questions, and he couldn't focus on what Baker was saying next.
"Well, we're very lucky to have you, Sophie, and we're glad you're here," a gentle voice said coming from the second row.
"Thank you, Grace," said Lady Mae to the girl who had spoken up.
"Why don't you take a seat beside Grace, and we can get this class started," suggested Mrs. Jones, the teacher of the class.
Scott felt relieved that the attention was now off him, and he took a seat beside Grace. After the class, Grace introduced herself to Scott as Gracie, and they discovered that they had the same next class. She offered to walk with Scott, or as she called him, Sophie, to their next class.
While they walked, Gracie asked Scott why his voice was so deep and why he wasn't following the dress code fully. Scott explained the whole situation, and Gracie laughed. "Well, Sophie, I'll make sure you fit right in. Don't worry!"
They arrived at their next class and sat beside each other. Scott felt more comfortable around Gracie, and he began to relax a little. After this class, they had lunch, and Gracie invited Scott to sit with her and her friends. "Hey, Sophie, if you want, you can eat lunch with me. My friends and I are going to McDonald's if you'd like to join." Having no other option, Scott agreed.
At McDonald's, Gracie explained Scott's situation to the other girls, and they all thought it was hilarious. They were eager to help him fit in and encouraged him to take gymnastics with them as their sport. Scott didn't like the idea of taking gymnastics, but he was pressured into agreeing.
The rest of Scott's classes didn't have Gracie in them but the day still went by quickly. He was glad that Gracie was friendly and accepting of him, but he didn't want to be known as Sophie for the rest of his time at Arbury. He was excited to go home and take off his uniform and be a boy again.
