The car pulled up in front of King Hedges School for Boys, and the grand old building left Scott in awe.
"Let's get a photo here!" Amelia exclaimed, already pulling out her phone. "Mum, can you take it?"
Her mum nodded, and the girls huddled together, smiling brightly. Scott stood stiffly, thinking about how these photos could come back to haunt him forever.
Inside the school, the dean greeted them warmly. "Ladies, you look stunning. You remind me of the girls when I was your age," he said, his eyes briefly lingering on Scott, who forced a smile while squirming internally.
As they turned a corner, Headmistress Baker, appeared. "Ah, our lovely ladies. Sophie, you look particularly enchanting tonight," she remarked, making Scott's feel self-conscious.
"Watch out for the boys, especially you, Sophie," she warned with a knowing look. The girls giggled while Scott let out a weak smile. They followed the sound of music toward the hall.
The hall was filled with hundreds of people, an even mix of boys and girls. The decorations made it feel like a 70s disco club. Amelia grabbed drinks for everyone, handing Scott a blackcurrant-flavored juice. As Scott took a sip, Chloe leaned in and whispered, "A little something extra to help you relax," with a wink.
Scott's eyes widened, but he decided not to make a fuss. He could already feel a warmth spreading through his body, easing his nerves slightly.
"Come on, Sophie, let's dance!" Amelia said, pulling Scott onto the dance floor with Chloe following closely.
Scott hesitated, but Chloe nudged him, "Don't be a wuss. Just copy us."
Scott looked around, mimicking the other girls' dance moves. The spiked juice seemed to help, and he began to loosen up. Before he knew it, he was lost in the music, having a good time with Amelia and Chloe. When "Dancing Queen" by ABBA played, Scott and Amelia belted out the lyrics together, laughing and enjoying the moment.
"Come on, Sophie, twirl!" Amelia shouted, grabbing Scott's hand and spinning him around. Scott giggled, feeling a strange but enjoyable sense of freedom. Chloe joined in, and the three of them formed a small circle, dancing and laughing.
"This is actually kind of fun," Scott thought, surprised at how much he was enjoying himself. The music, the energy of the room, and the alcohol made him forget his worries.
Afterward, they headed to a table where Anna and Gracie were sitting to regain some energy. The girls gossiped about the boys they'd seen dancing with girls from their school while Scott listened, enticed by the drama.
"Did you see Jamie dancing with Lucy? I thought they hated each other!" Anna said, wide-eyed.
Chloe laughed, "People change when there's a dance involved. And a bit of special juice," she added, raising her cup.
Scott smiled, enjoying the casual chatter.
Then Oliver and his friends approached the table. "Hi, ladies," he said smoothly. Gracie stiffened, turning her back on him.
Chloe was the first to introduce Scott to Oliver. "This is Sophie, an exchange student from Canada."
Oliver's eyes lit up. "Nice to meet you, Sophie. I'm Oliver."
Scott replied with short answers, aware of Oliver's initial attraction. "Hi. Nice to meet you," he said, trying to be polite.
Oliver smiled. "So, how do you like England so far?"
"It's different," Scott replied, trying to sound casual.
Oliver chuckled. "I bet. What's been the biggest surprise?"
Scott thought for a moment. "Probably the weather. It rains a lot more here."
Oliver laughed. "Yeah, that's England for you. Have you been to many dances?"
Scott shook his head. "No, not really."
Oliver's interest was clear, but Scott felt increasingly uncomfortable. Chloe noticed and teased Oliver, "Already smitten, are we?"
Oliver grinned, "Just getting to know a beautiful lady." Scott's stomach dropped, but he managed a weak smile.
Chloe smirked. "You should ask Sophie to dance, Oliver. Don't just stand there looking pretty."
Oliver's friends laughed, and Oliver turned to Scott, a little flustered. "Would you like to dance, Sophie?"
Scott hesitated, feeling trapped. Amelia nudged him. "Go on, Sophie. It'll be fun."
With no real way out, Scott nodded. "Okay, sure."
Oliver grabbed Scott's hand and led him to the dance floor. The rest of Oliver's friends asked the other girls to dance, leaving Gracie alone at the table.
On the dance floor, Oliver, a foot taller than Scott, grabbed his waist and pulled him close. Scott instinctively almost did the same but remembered to wrap his arms around Oliver's neck. They swayed slowly, and Scott hated every second of it.
Oliver tried to make small talk. "You look stunning tonight, Sophie."
Scott forced a smile, saying nothing.
"So, what's your favourite thing about England so far?" Oliver asked.
Scott struggled to focus. "I guess... the history. The old buildings are really cool."
Oliver smiled. "Yeah, they are. I'm glad you're having a good time."
As the song neared its end, Oliver's hand slid down to rest on Scott's bum. Chloe noticed and snapped a photo on her phone.
Scott's mind raced. He felt Oliver's eyes on him, trying to catch his gaze. He knew this trick—Oliver wanted him to look up for a kiss. It was a trick Scott used to use back home. Determined to avoid it, Scott kept his eyes down and stepped back before looking up.
"Thanks for the dance, but I'm going to go sit with Gracie," he said, trying to sound casual.
Oliver, unfazed, replied, "See you later." He returned to his friends and the other girls.
Scott walked over to Gracie.
