The café was bustling with the late morning brunch crowd. The smell of freshly brewed coffee and baked pastries wafted through the air, mingling with the sounds of clinking dishes and quiet conversation. Scott followed the girls to a corner table, feeling both anxious and excited. Gracie and Scott exchanged casual glances, both pretending nothing had happened between them the previous night.
Amelia took charge of ordering, her enthusiasm infectious. "I'll have the crepes with strawberries and a caramel latte," she said to the waiter, her eyes sparkling.
"I'll go for the avocado toast and a cappuccino," Anna added, glancing at the menu one last time.
"Chloe?" Amelia asked, nudging her friend.
"Just a black coffee and a croissant for me," Chloe replied, still waking up.
Gracie smiled warmly at Scott. "What about you, Sophie?"
Scott hesitated, scanning the menu. "Um, I'll have the same as Amelia. Crepes with strawberries and a caramel latte."
Once the orders were placed, the girls settled into their usual lively conversation. Amelia leaned forward, her eyes wide with excitement. "So, who's ready for some shopping after this? The boutique has a new fall collection that I can't wait to see."
Anna nodded enthusiastically. "I'm in! I need some new boots for the season."
Chloe, now sipping her coffee, smirked. "As long as we avoid the crazy shopkeeper, I'm up for it."
Scott forced a smile, trying to keep up with the chatter. "I guess I could look around," he said, not wanting to seem out of place. He felt Gracie's gaze on him but avoided eye contact, focusing instead on the steaming cup of caramel latte in front of him.
Gracie turned to Scott, her voice soft. "You'll love the boutique, Sophie. They have some really cute stuff."
Scott nodded, feeling a flutter in his stomach. "
Sounds good."
Their food arrived, and the table fell into a comfortable silence as they started eating. The crepes were delicious, and Scott savored each bite, grateful for the momentary distraction.
Amelia, always the conversationalist, broke the silence. "So, Sophie, tell us more about Canada. What's it like there in the fall?"
Scott smiled, glad to talk about home. "It's beautiful. The leaves change color, and everything is red, orange, and yellow. The air gets crisp, and there's this smell of wood smoke in the air. It's really peaceful."
Gracie listened intently, her eyes never leaving Scott. "That sounds amazing. I've always wanted to visit Canada."
Scott looked at her, their eyes meeting for a brief moment before he looked away. "You should, it's really something."
Anna leaned in, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "Do you miss it?"
"Yeah, I do," Scott admitted. "Especially the nature and the quiet. It's very different from here."
Chloe, now fully awake, joined in. "I can't imagine living somewhere so... quiet. I need constant action, you know?"
Amelia nodded in agreement. "Me too, but I think I'd like to experience a Canadian fall at least once."
The conversation flowed easily, the girls laughing and sharing stories. Scott felt more at ease, the earlier tension fading as they talked about everything from school to favourite movies.
After brunch, the girls paid the bill and made their way to the boutique. The crisp fall air greeted Scott's bare legs as he stepped outside, the sun casting a golden glow over the city streets. The boutique was only a short walk away, and they chatted excitedly as they walked.
