What shortly followed Cupid's confession was Eros pacing around their shared cloud that soared high above the quiet town of Meadowbrook. "Γαμώτο." He finally cursed. It was the first thing he has said in the past five minutes.
Cupid was counting, given that he didn't know how his brother would react to him admitting that he has fallen for a mortal. His wings drooped sadly as he stared down at the world below.
He now had a furrow in his brow as he mulled over what his brother had just admitted to. "I can't believe you did this, Cupid," Eros said finally, breaking the awkward silence. "Do you even know what kind of trouble you're in?" He asked, rhetorically.
Cupid weakly nodded his head to show that he understood. "I know, I know. But I couldn't help it. You should take a gander at her... she's so beautiful, so kind. I've watched her from afar, and I can't get her out of my head." He made the intellectual decision by keeping Y/n's name out of his mouth for the better of her well-being. He didn't want her to get punished for his insolence.
Eros shook his head. "You've broken one of the most sacred rules of our kind. If any of the other gods or goddesses hear about this, it won't be long until the three brothers find out. And you know what they do to those who turn their backs on them." He pointed out the obvious.
Cupid winced. He knew all too well what Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon were capable of. "I'm sorry, Eros. I didn't mean to cause any trouble. I just wanted to feel what it's like to be in love," he tried to justify his actions. "It's just..." he bites the inside of his cheek. "I've seen deities such as you and Mother get involved with morals and figured that—" Before he could ever dream of finishing his sentence, Eros beat him to it.
Eros stopped pacing and turned to face his little brother. "You can't just pursue your own selfish wishes, Cupid. Your job is to bring love to the world. That's all you should be focused on." Their eyes locked in a heated stare. The air between them was thick with tension, and the stillness between them was almost unbearable.
The area around them was filled with a deafening silence once more as the brothers continued to stare at each other, neither willing to back down. The atmosphere was so tense that it felt like the slightest movement would shatter the fragile peace that remained between them.
After a few more moments of uncomfortable silence, Cupid finally broke the stare-down and turned his back on Eros, his shoulders tense and his jaw clenched before he let out an aggravated sigh, his anger hanging over his head like a dark storm cloud.
"Eros..." Cupid looked up again at his sibling with pleading eyes. "Please, just say something. I can't just sit here in silence anymore." He begged.
Eros couldn't help but scoff. "Fine. Do you want to know what I think? I think you're being foolish. Not only would Father but many of the others have warned you about falling in love with a mortal. It's different for you. You have a duty to the world, Cupid, and it's not one like mine or Mother's. Your one job is to bring compassion to the earth. And if you can't do that, then what good are you?" He reprimanded the god of love.
Cupid felt a lump form in his throat. "I'm sorry, Eros. I'll try to do better." He apologized.
Eros shook his head. "It's not about doing better, Cupid. It's about following the rules. You can't just do whatever you want and expect there to be no lasting effects. You need to think about the bigger picture. You're not just risking your own life here, but you are risking hers. Whoever she may be. Take it from me: it'll be better, in the long run, to just let her go. There are plenty of women in Mount Olympus who adore you."
But none of them piques Cupid's interest. He doesn't want any of them. It's Y/n he longs to be with. To learn from, observe, protect, and serve. Alas, he hung his head in shame. "I know. I'm sorry. I'll fix this. I promise." He continued to apologize for his actions in hopes to appease his older brother.
Somewhat relaxing, Eros hesitantly approached Cupid where he placed a hand on his shoulder. "I hope you do. For your sake, and the sake of the world," he somewhat threatened before pulling away, directing his attention toward the darkening sky above them. "It's getting late..." he noted. "Farewell, brother, it would seem this is where we part ways. I have work to do. Until next time." With that, Eros dived off from the cloud to fly off to gods know where.
And as he watched his brother remove himself from the premise, Cupid felt like his body was on fire from how much his blood with boiling. He shook his head to himself, clearly upset with their dispute and by the fact that he couldn't have things his way. He'd have to keep a low profile if he wants to be in Y/n's presence because one thing is for sure: he cannot be seen with her or else she will be punished by Zeus himself. "Μαλάκας." He cursed under his breath.
