chapter 10: a nightmare inside of a nightmare

Tom's POV:

I shiver from the cold, but that soon stops as I feel something wrap around me. As soon as I'm healed, I'll leave these two. The things I've said ruined everything. Memories of the incident flash by quickly. The look of complete heartbreak on Lucy's face, tears swelling in her eyes. A shaky breath from her as she tries to stay strong. The tears rolled down her slightly bloody and muddy face, the way she looked at me, thinking I never said that as the realisation kicks in. The glare Jace gave me, the moments just before he punched me. The tears just flow down Lucy's face at this point, and as I go to comfort her, Jace comes in and punches me. He, as a good punch on him, I'll admit, really did knock some sense into me. I know Lucy will never forgive me.. at least I don't think. She did carry me back and beg Jace to nurse me back to health, but after this, I'll be rendered friendless. Not only have I lost my only friends, but I'm probably alive in this apocalypse, I lost my girlfriend and the light of my life. Looking back, she was the only reason I had to keep going in the apocalypse, I let myself go afterwards, but kept going for her. She's my heart, and she holds it. Ever since I met her, she has stolen my heart, and I'd never want it any other way. 

I remember all the things that have happened to me. I lost all my friends over one petty lie someone told them, I slowly lost myself because of fear and paranoia. High school hit like a brick, too. My social skills plummeted, and I was rendered friendless yet again. I still am a shy, weak mess, but I try to seem strong to prove it. 'Fake it till you make it'. I'm still waiting for the 'make it's to happen. My mind flashes to when I first met Lucy. My mind tries twisting it to seem like it went horribly, not even close.

 I remember the day we bumped into each other because of the school overcrowding us. Her quiet little "Sorry!" As she gets pushed against the wall. Me grabbing her arm, and pulling her to a safer area. "Thank you.." The shy girl spoke, her voice was fucking harmonic. My heart pounded and I think I blushed. "You're welcome" I reply, a small crack in my voice. She giggles at me. Her giggle.. wow. "I'm Lucy!" she smiles, she's a little ball of light it's so fucking cute. "Uhm, Tom." I blurt out, I realise how antisocial I am. She smiles and starts talking to me more, and it turns out she and Jace were friends too! We hung out as a trio and kept talking, and I kept falling harder and harder for her. 

I remember the times we talked, just me and Lucy, laughing and joking around. I think Jace noticed something between me and her, the way we looked at each other gave it away. I remember once when she didn't come to school and I talk to Jace. He was standoffish with me so I confess. "Jace?" I mutter. "What?" He replies, I sigh deeply. "I know you.. see Lucy as a mother figure." Jace nods. "I don't wanna take her away from you.." I continue. Jace sighs. "God if you like her say so pussy" He spits. I nod and we agree that I won't steal Lucy away, and he agreed.. reluctantly.

 I wake up, but I just see Lucy stroking my hair and petting a wounded deer beside me, apologising that she can't help it as she needs to keep the resources saved for us. The deer passes on and Lucy gives it a brief hug before laying back, sighing and starts talking to me and how much she adores me, not realising I'm awake. She starts yawning, a sweet sound honestly but smacks her head against the tree to wake herself up. I hear her mutter about how she has to keep awake for me and my heart skips a beat. She still loves me, I still have a chance! I listen to her quietly sing lullabies to me and I fall asleep yet again, in her warm, comforting arms. Silence surrounds us. Only her heartbeat and singing can be heard, and it feels like heaven. My eyes slowly flutter shut, and I feel a small kiss planted on my lips. I kiss back. My heaven is back.
