It had been five days since we set up camp and there were about fifty of us in here. My role was to protect the barrier, looking out for flukes. My day started off as a normal shift, me and the boys chatting about life before the explosions, whilst on lookout. That was until one of the boys pointed out a figure standing behind an abandoned car. However this didn't look like a fluke. They looked human. In fact they looked like a girl. This was highly unusual, we thought we had already gathered all the survivors. One of the boys delivered her the warning message through the tanoi system. The warning we give to anything unknown that may be a threat. But she didn't run, instead she sat down on the ground and practically pleaded us to help. It seemed like she had no idea what was going on or even where she was. We all looked at each other in shock. What was she doing? Was she out of her mind?
"We need to let her in" I pleaded to the others.
"What if she's infected?" one of the boys responded.
"She's going to die if we don't help. Look she's not moving. She's just sitting there. We can always quarantine her" I argued.
"We aren't meant to let unknown trespassers in" another said.
"The flukes will be here soon and she isn't going to run. Please let her in. I can't watch someone be attacked by those things. " I pleaded. The boys waited for a few seconds. You could see their brains ticking away, contemplating the best option.
"Alright but it's on you if shes infected. No one touches her ok. She goes straight to quarantine." The more senior guard replied before jumping down from his post and opening the barrier.
What the hell was she thinking?
