Chapter Eleven: Henry

I lay in my bed, I couldn't stop thinking of her. I was fascinated. How could she have survived out there on her own? No wonder she had given up by the time she got here. We were all monitoring her and the child from the control room. We were instructed to report any new symptoms or changes to either of them. I volunteered for this role, it meant I could study her a little longer. Most of the footage was pretty boring, they were sleeping. I don't blame them, there isn't much to do in there after all. However there were some moments I couldn't forget. The time where she made the child a toy out of her own clothes to help him go to sleep. The times when she gave him all her food because he needed it more than her. This girl was selfless. She hardly knew this child but she loved him as if he were her own. Despite the child calling her his 'mummy' we all knew that she wasn't old enough to have a child of his age. We believed her. Yet she took it upon herself to care for him, when she didn't have to and when most people wouldn't have. She amazes me. I want to know more. There weren't many people like her and of a similar age to me in here. There were times during my shift that were so frustrating. She was calling out for more food, but I wasn't able to help her, as much as I wanted to. She didn't look like she was infected, neither of them had developed symptoms. She should be released soon and then I will finally get to talk to her. But until then, I will continue to watch and dream...
