At day's hour, the only coffee shop in the village is usually filled to the brim with villagers. That's the reason you and your uncle rarely ever go there during the afternoons. It's simply too much of a hassle when you can prepare food yourselves in the comfort of your home, and there isn't really much to eat out lately.
"I'll take an Iced Americano. Add an extra shot if you can, please."
"No problem. I got you covered, Doc!"
It's the same kind of food and drinks being dragged out every single day. But, with life going on a busy streak, Dohyun couldn't bring himself to cook or make anything for himself. Not when he had other important matters to attend to. He wanted to bring you with him, but you insisted on going to school and not missing out on any important lesson. Typical.
When he was about your age, in his last year of high school, the doctor would stay over at the school's library, past curfew, and study his heart out for college entrance exams. Always skipped dinner and definitely had no time to spare for sleep. In a way, you were just like him; Dohyun could see himself in you, and he was beyond a proud uncle. He's already said it so many times, though he wasn't sure if you were listening to him or not. Probably not, if the man was being honest. The past memories of your younger self made him smile–a rare sight nowadays.
"Alright, Doc. I have your Iced Americano ready to go! The extra shot is on the house; keep up the good work!"
Dohyun wasn't sure what made him become giddier, the mellow nostalgia or the espresso freebie. Either way, the young man was happy that there were no long lines. The server had quickly served him a glass of what he ordered and made his way to the few other customers. The owner, on the other hand, was seen at the center of his cafe, cooking lunches along with preparing drinks. Dohyun has talked to him a couple of times; a kind man with a humble stature.
"What a pleasant surprise! I didn't think I'd be seeing you here, Dohyun-sshi. How has everything been?"
The doctor looks up from the stack of papers he has in his hands. The owner greeted him with a benevolent smile, though his attention gradually shifted between Dohyun and the sizzling pan. But the owner makes it an effort to multitask.
"Did you hear about the Jangs? Apparently, they moved out of the village last night."
In the middle of processing everything, Dohyun swallowed the rest of his coffee with a gulp. He knew the married couple all too well considering he wrote the official death certificate of their one and only daughter. He wasn't on bad terms with them, but neither were they affable and agreeable companions.
"The Jangs? You're talking about Wonyoung-sshi's parents?"
No use in playing dumb, but Dohyun was oddly curious about their decision to suddenly move at the dead of night. The owner continued to explain that on the same day, another family close to the Jangs moved away without even saying goodbye to the neighbors.
