Chapter 1: The Weight of Gold and Gray
Everything was ruined.
The stones of Hogwarts, which had stood proud and ancient for a thousand years, lay shattered in blackened heaps of rubble. Diagon Alley was a hollow shell of shattered glass and charred brick, and Hogsmeade was quiet, draped in the heavy, suffocating silence of a graveyard. The war had demanded too much. Too many lives had been extinguished in the dark, and Jasmine could no longer think. The lingering echoes of battle—the screams, the desperate shouts, the deafening blasts of destructive magic—swirled endlessly in her mind.
Remus was gone. Tonks was gone. Sirius had never returned from the veil, and Albus Dumbledore was long dead.
Why did it have to end this way? Jasmine thought, her boots crunching softly on the debris as she walked slowly into the Great Hall.
Hermione was there in an instant, running forward to wrap her arms tightly around Jasmine. They clung to each other, two young women anchoring themselves amidst the wreckage of their youth. When they finally parted, they silently set to work, helping the survivors and accounting for the dead. The toll was devastating. Sixteen young souls had been lost to the final battle: five Hufflepuffs, six Ravenclaws, two Slytherins, and three Gryffindors. Many of their parents, Ministry workers who had fought bravely to capture Voldemort's elite Death Eaters, had fallen alongside them.
Their surviving siblings and cousins only lived because of the ancient protection barriers of the school and surrounding manors. Jasmine looked at their tear-stained faces and felt a profound, hollow ache. She knew this pain intimately. She had lost her childhood, her safety, and almost everyone she had ever loved.
Nearby, they found Ron standing with the Weasley twins and the rest of his family. The grief hanging over them was palpable; they had lost Percy, who had sacrificed himself to shield Ginny from a fatal curse cast by Barty Crouch Jr. in the chaos.
"Do you think we could have done things differently?" Ron asked, his voice cracking as he stared at his dust-covered hands. "To make it end better?"
"No," Jasmine replied with a heavy sigh. "No one would tell us anything, Ron. They treated us like children when it suited them, and like soldiers when they needed weapons. I can only hope they reflect on all the warning signs they chose to ignore."
Hermione shook her head, her jaw tight with a quiet, burning anger. "They will have to get their heads out of their arses. This war must be the absolute end of the old ways. Magical Britain is decaying. Their past decisions have cost them their alliances, their wealth, and their future."
In the weeks that followed, the survivors refused to let the sacrifice be in vain. Those holding Wizengamot seats and school board positions finally stopped turning a blind eye. They overhauled the archaic creature laws, fortified Hogwarts with formidable ancient wards, and introduced practical new classes. They ensured the fallen were buried with honor, systematically tearing down the ridiculous, prejudiced laws that had poisoned their society for centuries.
Amidst the recovery, there were miracles. Severus Snape had survived, rescued from the brink of death in the Shrieking Shack. Madam Pomfrey's swift diagnostic scans, combined with the quick thinking of Jasmine—who had pressed the correct anti-venom into his trembling hands while crying over his collapsed form—had saved his life. When Jasmine had realized Severus was actively reaching for his pocketed antidotes during his final moments, she had felt a blush of deep embarrassment for her dramatic tears, but her swift action had made all the difference.
Snape's name was swiftly cleared. The public learned the truth: he was Dumbledore's ultimate spy, carrying the heaviest secrets of the Light. Though hailed as a hero, Severus despised the title, scowling and threatening to hex any reporter who dared approach him.
