Chapter 8: Into the Balkan Mist

With the agreement sealed between the Volturi guards and her family, Jasmine slipped out of the Cullen residence and walked back across the gravel path. The damp, cool night of Forks pressed against her cheeks, a stark contrast to the burning magical sands of Egypt or the humid, heavy air of Italy they had avoided. This cold, quiet town was worth protecting.

When she stepped back into the warmth of the Potter Manor, the dining room table had been completely transformed. Hermione had spread out several sheets of parchment, heavily annotated with runic equations and defensive ward layouts. Severus and Draco were huddled over one side, debating the structural weaknesses of old European shielding charms, while Fred and George were quietly tinkering with a pair of metallic, pocket-sized brass spheres.

"We've finalized the approach," Hermione said, looking up as Jasmine entered. "The fortress is ancient, built during the early fifteenth century. It relies on a foundational 'blood-and-stone' warding system. It's incredibly strong against physical force, but highly vulnerable to runic destabilization."

"Which is where Draco and I come in," Severus added, his voice low and smooth. "We will approach from the eastern ridge, where the ward line is thinnest. Once we feed a counter-curse into the primary leyline, the perimeter alarm will freeze for exactly seven minutes. That is your window."

"And we'll make sure those seven minutes are pure, unadulterated chaos for anyone inside," George grinned, holding up one of the brass spheres. "We've loaded these with a highly concentrated blend of Instant Darkness Powder and a mild, localized magic-dampening mist. It won't hurt them, but it will completely disorient their senses."

"Excellent," Jasmine said, nodding. "We depart at dawn. We'll use a targeted, long-range side-along Apparition to reach the base of the mountains, then proceed on foot to avoid detection."

Dawn over the Balkans

The transition from the lush, green forests of Washington to the jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Balkan Mountains was jarring. The air here was thin, biting, and smelled of ancient stone and dormant pine.

The group materialized in a quiet, snow-covered ravine a mile below the fortress. Jasmine, Hermione, Severus, Draco, Ron, and the twins immediately cast localized Warming Charms to ward off the freezing wind, their breath blooming in pale white clouds before them. High above, nestled precariously on the edge of a sheer cliff, sat the dark, imposing silhouette of the abandoned fortress.

"The wards are active," Draco whispered, his pale eyes scanning the invisible currents of magic rippling through the cold air. "I can feel the static hum from here."

"Movement," Ron muttered, pointing toward the lower parapets of the stone structure. Even from this distance, the unnatural, fluid speed of a patrolling vampire was unmistakable. "They've got sentries."

"Then let's give them something else to look at," Fred whispered, tapping his brass sphere with his wand.

Following Severus's lead, the group crept silently up the rocky slope, utilizing basic disillusionment charms to blend seamlessly into the gray rock and white snow. When they reached the boundary of the eastern ridge, Severus and Draco knelt by a weathered, rune-carved stone half-buried in the frost.

Severus drew his wand, his movements precise and methodical as he began to chant a quiet, low incantation. Draco joined in, his wand tip glowing with a pale blue light as they gently unraveled the ancient defensive threads.

For a tense moment, the air grew incredibly heavy, the magical pressure building until—with a soft, silent pop—the invisible barrier rippled and went completely still.

"Go," Severus hissed, maintaining his focus on the stone. "You have exactly seven minutes."

Jasmine didn't hesitate. "Fred, George—now!"

The twins hurled their brass spheres over the stone walls of the fortress courtyard. A second later, a massive, silent eruption of pitch-black smoke and thick gray mist billowed outward, swallowing the entire upper level of the castle in absolute darkness. Shouts of confusion in a foreign tongue echoed through the stone corridors, accompanied by the panicked, frustrated hisses of the rogue vampires who suddenly found themselves entirely blind and stripped of their enhanced senses.

"Let's move," Jasmine commanded, drawing her wand as she and Hermione led the charge through the open gates.

Jasmine breached the courtyard first, her boots hitting the frosted cobblestones with silent precision. The instant darkness powder had done its job flawlessly. A thick, impenetrable velvet blackness hung over the courtyard, completely neutralizing the vampires' predatory sight, while the heavy, magic-dampening mist left the rogue wizards coughing and disoriented, their wand tips sputtering uselessly in the gloom.

"Keep your shields tight!" Hermione whispered behind her, her voice cutting through the chaotic sounds of coughing and panicked hissing. "Protego!"

A rogue wizard, blindly firing a red spell into the dark, saw his magic splash harmlessly against Hermione's shimmering shield. Before he could attempt another, Ron stepped out of the fog. "Expelliarmus!" The wizard's wand flew from his hand, vanishing into the deep snow, followed quickly by a silent "Stupefy" from Ron that sent the man crumpling to the stone floor.

"That's one down!" Ron muttered.

Suddenly, the cold air shifted. Even without her aura sight, Jasmine could feel the immense physical displacement of a vampire moving at high speed toward them, guided only by the sound of their voices.

"Incarcarous!" Jasmine cast non-verbally. Thick, magically conjured ropes wrapped around the charging vampire mid-stride, sending him crashing face-first onto the frozen ground. Before he could use his brute strength to snap the bindings, Fred and George materialized from the mist, holding small glass vials.

"A little potion from the lab," Fred said, shattering the vial over the vampire's bound limbs. A localized freezing draft, modified from Severus's cold-sleep formulas, rapidly coated the vampire in a thick, immobilizing layer of magical blue ice, locking him completely in place.

"And a little silence for the road," George added, casting a quick localized silencing charm so the frozen sentry couldn't warn the others inside.

"Four minutes left on the wards," Draco's voice echoed through their communication mirrors. He and Severus were still stationed at the eastern ridge, holding the primary leyline in a temporary state of stasis. "The central tower is heavily guarded. The runner is inside."

"We're moving in," Jasmine replied into her mirror.

She led Hermione and Ron through the arched stone doorway of the main keep, their wand tips lit with tiny, controlled points of light to guide their way through the narrow, winding corridors. The stone walls were damp and ancient, whispering with the residual dark magic of a century of isolation.

At the end of the hall, the heavy oak doors of the grand hall stood slightly ajar. Inside, a tall, pale wizard with a scar slicing through his left eyebrow was pacing frantically, clutching the cracked pocket watch portkey that had delivered Demetri and Felix to the Pacific Northwest. Surrounding him were three red-eyed vampires, their feral postures indicating they were ready to defend their master to the death.

"He returned with no victory, only a tail between his legs," the lead vampire sneered, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. "The Volturi guards are dead, yet you tremble like a child."

"You don't understand!" the scarred wizard hissed, his fingers trembling over the portkey. "The magic that intercepted us... it wasn't a vampire. It was a witch. A powerful one. If she can track this portkey—"

"She already has," Jasmine's voice rang out, clear and cold as she pushed the heavy oak doors fully open.

The three vampires hissed, crouching instantly to spring, but Hermione and Ron were already moving, their wands raised to face the threat.
