Chapter 20: The Ruins of Rome

The cold, ancient stones of the ruined Roman castle stood silent in the quiet Italian forest. Jasmine walked through the crumbling archways, her mates and her family flanking her on all sides.

"So, you've come," a smooth, accented voice echoed. Two pale, red-eyed vampires stepped out from the shadows of the stone pillars. "And you brought your little human mates and family."

"I'm guessing you are Vladimir, and you are Stefan," Jasmine said, stepping forward.

"Yes," Stefan answered, his eyes cold.

"I know we are supposed to be entirely serious right now," Jasmine smiled brightly, "but I absolutely love your accents."

Theo let out a soft sigh behind her. "My love... right now?"

"What? I'm just saying!" Jasmine giggled. She turned her green eyes back to the two Romanian ancients. "Besides, I believe you would like to meet your second mates, wouldn't you?"

Vladimir and Stefan stared at the girls, their ancient, cold hearts thrumming with a sudden, overwhelming warmth.

"It is always better to leave the past behind," Jasmine told them softly. "It can only get better from here."

"If you ever try to start a war again," Jasmine added, her voice turning sweet but carrying a terrifying, silent magical promise, "I may look human, but I am a witch, and I can end you both in an instant. Understood?"

"Ye-yes, ma'am," the two ancient warlords stuttered in unison, their eyes wide with fear.

Jasmine nodded happily, turning to join her mates as they made their way back to the transport. Everyone was looking at her with amusement and left Vladimir and Stephen alone with their soulmates.

"What?" Jasmine ask and everyone shook their heads at her with a smile and they all went home.
