Chapter 13: Broken Bonds and New Journeys
Nearly a month had passed since Felix and Demetri had returned to the ancient, stone-carved halls of Volterra. But the quiet peace that had settled over the Potter Manor was fractured just a few weeks later when a sudden, jarring shift rippled through the Pacific Northwest.
The Cullens had left Forks.
They had packed up and vanished into the misty horizon, leaving no forwarding address and only a trail of broken promises behind. The only person who truly understood the depth of the devastation they left in their wake was Bella. Jasmine, attuned to the delicate, golden threads of the emotional bonds she could naturally perceive, could feel the sheer, agonizing weight of Bella's heartbreak radiating all the way from the Swan residence.
Unable to stand her friend's suffering any longer, Jasmine grabbed her car keys and drove straight to the small, white house on the edge of town.
When she knocked on the front door, it was opened by Charlie Swan. The Chief of Police looked exhausted, his shoulders slumped with worry for his daughter.
"Hi, Mr. Swan," Jasmine said softly, offering a warm, polite smile despite the urge to let her own tears fall. "I'm Jasmine. I'm a friend of Bella's from school. I was wondering if it would be okay if I could see her?"
Charlie looked at the gentle, green-eyed girl and felt a sudden wave of relief. He nodded, stepping aside to let her in. "Of course. She's upstairs. She hasn't been doing well, Jasmine."
"I'll take care of her, sir," Jasmine promised.
As Jasmine made her way into the hallway, the sound of slow, hesitant footsteps echoed from the stairs. Bella stood there, her eyes red and hollow, looking completely drained of life. She stared at Jasmine as if she were a mirage.
"Jas?" Bella whispered, her voice cracking with a tiny, fragile spark of hope. "Is that really you?"
Jasmine's heart broke. Tears welled in her own eyes as she nodded. "It's me, Bella."
With a choked sob, Bella ran down the remaining steps, throwing herself into Jasmine's arms. Jasmine caught her tightly, anchoring her sister-in-all-but-blood as they both sank slowly to the hardwood floor, kneeling together in a fierce, protective embrace. Bella clung to Jasmine as if she were the only lifeline left in a drowning world.
"Hey, shh, shh, I'm here," Jasmine whispered repeatedly, brushing a soothing hand through Bella's tangled hair. "I'm right here, and I am never leaving you. I promise. I love you, sis. I really do."
Hearing the fierce, unconditional love in Jasmine's voice, the rigid tension in Bella's body finally began to melt. She rested her head against Jasmine's shoulder, her breathing slowing down. Jasmine looked up over Bella's shoulder to see Charlie watching them from the kitchen doorway. She offered him a small, reassuring smile, which the worried father returned with a look of profound gratitude.
In the hours and days that followed, Jasmine and her family practically adopted the Swans. They refused to let Bella slip into the dark, catatonic depression that threatened to pull her under.
One evening, Jasmine convinced Bella to get dressed up for a nice dinner out with her father. Bella showered and put on a cozy green long-sleeved sweatshirt paired with a brown skirt, long black sheer socks, and short black leather boots. Jasmine decided to match her aesthetic, wearing a heavy, oversized sweatshirt with dark jean shorts, matching black sheer socks, and short black boots. Even Charlie looked remarkably sharp, wearing a clean black shirt, a dark jacket, and long dark jeans.
They drove to a quiet, warm restaurant not far from the Swan house. As they sat at their table, Charlie looked between the two girls with a soft smile.
"So, Jasmine," Charlie asked, leaning forward. "How did you and Bella actually meet?"
