Chapter 18: The Battle
Several months had passed since Athenodora, Theo, and Caius had decided to stay in the damp forests of Forks for their mate. In that time, they had come to know the true depth of Jasmine's soul—she was a beacon of pure kindness, love, and light.
Caius had once believed he could simply ignore the pull of a soulmate bond, but the moment he had looked into Jasmine's emerald eyes, he knew he was lost. Those eyes held the heavy, unspoken weight of centuries of survival. It wasn't just Jasmine; her entire family carried the deep, emotional scars of a war-torn past. Seeing their quiet resilience, Caius knew he would burn the world to ashes before he ever let anyone hurt them again.
He shook his head, pulling his focus back to the present. Across the snow-covered clearing, the newborn army emerged from the tree line, their red eyes wild and untamed.
Caius sneered, his cold lips curling in disgust at the feral beasts. Beside him, his mates, his family, and the elite guard stood ready, their silent communication absolute.
Jasmine
High up on the snow-covered mountain peak, Jasmine paced back and forth, her hands clasped tightly. Below them, the faint sounds of the battle echoed through the valley.
"My darling dove, everything will be alright," Severus said softly, stepping forward and wrapping a heavy, insulated cloak around her shoulders to keep her warm.
"What kind of idea is this?" Jasmine grumbled, her breath misting in the freezing air. "Leaving us up here when we are perfectly capable of defending ourselves and Bella."
"I know," Severus chuckled softly. "But you must understand... when it comes to vampire mates, their protective instincts are entirely absolute. Nothing on this earth can stand in their way."
Jasmine paused, thinking of how possessive and fiercely protective Caius, Theo, and Athenodora had been since they arrived. They kept her close, watched over her every step, and did everything in their power just to see her smile. Tears welled in her eyes, a sudden wave of emotion catching her off guard. She had spent her entire youth fighting for everyone else; she had never expected to find a love that fought so fiercely for her in return.
"Do you think... do you think they will still love us?" Jasmine asked, her voice cracking with vulnerability. "Knowing all the physical and mental scars we carry?"
"Yes, they will," Severus answered softly, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Because they have lived through their own centuries of darkness, and they recognize the strength in yours."
Jasmine nodded, wiping her eyes as they made their way back to where Bella, Edward, Ron, the twins, Neville, Luna, Lucius, Narcissa, and Draco were waiting. Drawing her wand, Jasmine cast a powerful, silent concealment charm, masking their scents and hiding their signatures from the mountain.
"Victoria... she's here," Edward suddenly whispered, his eyes wide. "She doesn't see Bella. She's heading this way with Riley."
The red-headed vampire and her companion burst through the snow, running directly toward their location. But before they could reach the clearing, Jasmine raised her wand.
"Mobilicorpus!" With a powerful surge of magic, Victoria and Riley were lifted off their feet, suspended helplessly in the air. Jasmine swept her wand downward, levitating them down the mountain slope to where the remaining Volturi and Cullen forces had just finished securing the battlefield.
As they touched down in the lower clearing, Jasmine spotted a small, terrified newborn girl cowering behind a stone. Jasmine bypassed the struggling Victoria entirely, walking straight to the girl and pulling her gently into her arms.
"Shh, my darling, shh, be calm," Jasmine whispered softly, her magic flowing over the girl's frantic core like a soothing balm. "I know you are thirsty, but you are safe now."
The girl's wild, red eyes softened, her breathing slowing as she leaned into Jasmine's warmth. Jasmine guided her toward Thea. "Keep her safe here until we decide what to do." She turned back to the girl. "What is your name, child?"
"Bree," the girl whispered.
"YOU TRAITOR!" Victoria screamed from her magical bindings, thrashing wildly. "I SHOULD HAVE KILLED YOU WHEN I HAD THE CHANCE! YOU DIDN'T DO A DAMN THING TO HELP US!"
"You will keep your mouth SHUT," Jasmine growled.
The sheer, ancient power in Jasmine's voice made everyone in the clearing—vampire and wizard alike—step back. Her green eyes glowed with a terrifying, brilliant emerald light.
"You will answer for the crimes of creating a newborn army and terrorizing innocent lives," Jasmine said, her voice dropping to an icy whisper.
With a sharp flick of her wrist, the surrounding trees came alive. Thick, ancient wooden vines wrapped around Victoria and Riley, tightening with a slow, crushing force.
"This is for coming after my sister," Jasmine growled.
"You mean ours," Ron corrected with a grin from the sidelines.
"Ronald," Jasmine warned.
"Sorry," Ron muttered, though the twins were snickering behind him.
Jasmine turned a terrifying, serene smile toward Victoria. She opened her palm, and a bright, dancing orb of magical fire bloomed above her skin.
"Isn't it beautiful?" Jasmine murmured. "A magic that can build... or destroy. You took innocent teenagers and forced them into a life of violence they never wanted. And for what? A foolish quest for revenge, because your mate James decided to toy with another vampire's blood singer."
Victoria stared at her in horror, while Riley looked completely confused.
"Oh, poor, naive Riley," Jasmine cooed softly. "Did you actually think she loved you? James was her soulmate. He chose to hunt Bella, knowing the consequences of our laws, and he paid the price. Victoria left you to die as a mere shield."
With a final, decisive sweep of her arm, the magical fire surged forward, swallowing Victoria and Riley in a brilliant, consuming blaze.
Once the ashes settled, Jasmine walked back to Bree, placing a gentle hand on her cheek. "You, my dear, need to find your true path. Your soulmate is currently with a coven called the Denali. The moment you enter their territory, he will find you." She handed the girl a slip of paper with coordinates. "Go. Take care of yourself."
Bree stared at the paper, tears of gratitude in her eyes, before throwing her arms around Jasmine's neck. "Thank you," she whispered, before vanishing into the trees.
Severus stepped up beside Jasmine, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Let's go home."
