Chapter 7: Unraveling the Golden Thread
With the injured Volturi guards resting securely under the watchful eyes of Carlisle and Esme, the rest of the family gathered in the spacious living room of the Potter residence. The atmosphere was charged with a quiet, focused energy. Jasmine stood in the center of the room, her emerald eyes reflecting the flickering light of the hearth as she prepared to trace the rogue wizard's path.
"We need a clear visual of where that portal collapsed," Jasmine said, turning her gaze to Hermione. "Mione, do you have any residual magic on you from the clearing?"
Hermione nodded, stepping forward. She closed her eyes and focused on the memory of the spellfire. With a gentle tap of her wand against her temple, she pulled a thin, silvery strand of memory from her mind and let it drift toward the center of the room.
Jasmine caught the memory strand with the tip of her wand. She began to spin it, weaving her own magical core into the thread. A soft, warm golden light bloomed in the space between them, expanding into a delicate, three-dimensional magical map. Tiny golden lines pulsed outward from Forks, stretching across continents like a complex web of starlight.
"There," Draco murmured, leaning over the back of the sofa to watch the magical display. "The line is splitting. It's crossing the Atlantic."
"He used a chain of coordinates to throw off any standard tracking wards," Severus observed, his dark eyes narrowing as he analyzed the golden currents. "A clever tactic, but highly unstable. A portkey of that speed and distance leaves a massive atmospheric tear."
Jasmine focused her intent, pushing her aura into the map. The golden threads vibrated, hummed, and suddenly surged forward, tracing a sharp path directly toward the dense, mountainous regions of southern Europe. The line pulsed brightly before snapping to a halt, hovering over a remote, isolated peak shrouded in magical mist.
"He's in the Balkan Mountains," Jasmine announced, her voice calm but carrying an icy edge. "There's an old, abandoned magical fortress hidden there. It looks like a staging ground."
"If they are hiding in a fortress, they're expecting company," Ron said, crossing his arms. "We can't just stroll in there."
"We won't have to," Jasmine replied, a small, knowing smile playing on her lips. "We know exactly where they are now, and more importantly, we know they have no idea we can see them. We hold the element of surprise."
She closed her hand, and the golden map dissolved into a shower of harmless, glittering sparks. Turning to her family, she felt a profound wave of gratitude. They had come to Forks to find peace, but they were more than capable of defending it.
"We prepare tonight," Jasmine said, her gaze sweeping over the determined faces of her loved ones. "Tomorrow, we pay them a visit."
The plan was set. The magical map had dissolved, but the coordinates of the remote fortress in the Balkan Mountains remained etched into Jasmine's mind.
"We need to be smart about this," Hermione cautioned, pulling a thick roll of blank parchment and a self-inking quill from her bag to start drafting their tactical approach. "If this is a rogue faction allied with dark wizards, they aren't just relying on vampire speed. They will have protective wards, defensive charms, and likely alarm systems set up to alert them the moment a magical signature bypasses their perimeter."
"Then we don't bypass them," Severus sneered smoothly from his corner of the room, his arms crossed over his chest. "We dismantle them. Draco and I can handle the ward-breaking. The younger Death Eaters were taught the structure of continental fortification wards during the height of the dark lord's reign. The patterns they use are highly predictable—designed for brute strength, not subtlety."
"And while you two are bringing down the shields, Fred and I can deploy some of our specialized distractions," George offered, a mischievous grin spreading across his face as he nudged his twin.
"Absolutely," Fred agreed, his eyes gleaming. "We've been working on a modified version of our Decoy Detonators. If we lace them with a bit of powdered venom-suppressant and silver-dust, we can create a localized blackout that will temporarily blind both vampire senses and magical focus. It'll give us all the cover we need to slip inside unnoticed."
Jasmine listened to her family plan, a quiet sense of pride washing over her. They had survived a war that had torn their homeland apart, and in doing so, they had become an incredibly cohesive, formidable unit. They weren't looking for a fight, but they were fiercely protective of the peaceful life they were building in Forks.
Suddenly, the front door opened, and Carlisle stepped back into the house, his expression grave.
"Carlisle," Jasmine said, turning to him. "How are Demetri and Felix?"
"They are stable," Carlisle reported, walking into the living room and resting his hands on the back of a wooden chair. "Esme is staying with them to ensure they rest. The potion Hermione brewed is doing wonders; their physical bodies are almost fully integrated again, but their thirst is immense. We've provided them with our stored reserves, though they are still highly unsettled by the concept of animal blood. More importantly, Demetri wants to speak with you, Jasmine. He understands that you've located the runner."
Jasmine nodded. "I'll go speak with him. Hermione, keep working on the layout with Severus and the twins. We need to be ready to move by dawn."
With a quick, reassuring look at her sister, Jasmine walked out of the house and made her way across the misty, gravel path toward the Cullen residence. The cool night air of Forks was thick with moisture, the scent of pine and wet earth grounding her as she stepped inside the bright, modern home.
She found Demetri and Felix sitting in the spacious den. Demetri's dark eyes locked onto Jasmine the moment she entered the room, his tracking instincts instantly cataloging her presence.
"You found him," Demetri said, his raspy voice cutting through the quiet room. It wasn't a question.
"I did," Jasmine replied, stopping a few feet away. "He's holed up in an abandoned magical fortress in the Balkan Mountains. My family is already drawing up a plan to infiltrate the site and neutralize the threat before they realize you survived."
Felix leaned forward, his massive shoulders tensing. "We are coming with you."
"No, you aren't," Jasmine countered, her green eyes flashing with an absolute authority that made both Volturi guards blink in surprise. "You can barely stand without your joints aching, Felix. If you try to run at full speed, let alone fight a coordinated group of rogue vampires and dark wizards, your body will literally tear itself apart again. You stay here, recover, and let us handle the vanguard."
Demetri let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "You speak to the Volturi guard as if we are children, witch."
"I speak to you as someone who just saved your lives," Jasmine corrected smoothly, a sharp, teasing smile playing on her lips. "And as someone who has fought and won a war against far worse than what is waiting in those mountains. Besides, we have a personal stake in this now. Those wizards are utilizing dangerous, unstable magical portals right in our new backyard. We won't allow them to bring their chaos to Forks."
Demetri stared at her for a long moment, searching her brilliant green eyes. He found no fear there—only a fierce, unyielding determination and a power that hummed quietly beneath her skin. Slowly, the tracker bowed his head.
"Very well, Jasmine Potter," Demetri murmured. "But if you find the one who ordered the attack... leave him alive if you can. The Volturi will want to ask him some very specific questions."
"I make no promises," Jasmine said, her voice dropping to a quiet, dangerous whisper. "But I'll see what I can do."
