Eddy glanced around the boat yard, almost not bearing to see Alex leave. That was when he saw something or someone out of place amongst the yard. Fog pooled around the dock, it was horror movie-esque even. Chills ran up his spine, making him shiver. His eyes were locked with the silhouette of a man. For a second the man stood in the light, he was the man who had dragged Eddy into the organization. The man who promised to finish what he had started. A cheshire grin showed off his pearl white teeth, canines sharp like dogs. Eddy knew how they felt against flesh.
Eddy froze, no longer being able to focus on the boat leaving, or Brett near him. All he could feel was the dread building in his stomach. Brett’s plans had failed, despite how elaborate they had been, the brutish man had been one step ahead… He could do nothing as the man disappeared back into the shadows. Only for two more people to take his place. Their eyes were like marbles, only a dull shine on their otherwise lifelessness. They were like puppets as organization members often seemed to be.
“Brett….” Eddy barely got out, his throat tightening as he tried to get Brett’s attention. But his voice was below a whisper, barely audible, “Brett…”
“Yes, Eddy?” Brett whispered back, taking his eyes off the boat to look up at Eddy and then following Eddy’s gaze with his own, landing on the two men. “Let’s go.”
Eddy nodded, yet didn’t move, just watching the glint that he recognized as a barrel of a gun as the second person seemed to make their way across the yard. Creeping.
“Now,” Brett said, sounding all stern this time. He grabbed a hold of Eddy’s hand and pulled him behind the container by it so they could make a run for it in the cover of the metal box.
Eddy followed, trying to make his legs function. Although he did more stumbling than good running, “They found us.”
He got out, they found them despite the tight lipped plan. How did they know? Was there a mole? But how could that be, Brett only told two people? Unless their devices had been tapped and their calls had been listened to.“Must’ve spotted us pull out of the driveway,” Brett concluded as he pulled Eddy along between the containers, slaloming between them. They were moving to the edge of the yard, to an opening in the fence where Inu would have left a car for them. A fast one.
Eddy followed him, hearing a gunshot ring out. It was a warning for them, especially since he knew one was creeping their way.
“Listen, I need you to get in the car right away when we get to it, okay?” Brett instructed as he weaved them between the containers like he had run this route a million times.
“Okay,” Eddy licked his lips, he would obey. He wished he could be of use. He knew he could be but he felt like it was already so helpless.
They got to the fence, and Brett pulled back the wire to reveal a hole.
"Through here," he ordered, sticking his hand in the inner pocket of his jacket while he talked, holding the wire with the other hand. "Quick."Eddy looked around trying to sense any movements, trying to see if anyone was there. He rather get injured than Brett. He knew that the goons wouldn’t kill him, but they wouldn’t hesitate about Brett. So he slowly went through the hole. He had to be ready to fight.
Brett checked that his gun was loaded and ready, and was about to follow Eddy through the hole when the first of the two men showed himself from behind the container. He didn’t hesitate, pointing the gun, exhaling, and pulling the trigger. Just like he had done multiple times in this container yard before. The hit was better than it used to be, though.
