Harley's POV

Harley had no idea how long she had been staring into the mirror. She could faintly hear the ticking of the old grandfather clock downstairs, but she had lost track of the sound. The only thing that mattered to her was the glass in front of her, which had remained normal the entire time she stood in front of it. And yet, she watched. So did mirror Harley. Mirror Harley blinked when real Harley did, and didn't mutter a single ominous threat.

Harley could almost feel some kind of relief. After she remembered to take her meds, she was positive the vision had just been a delusion. Thank goodness I'm only crazy, she thought to herself. Just to be sure, she continued to stare into the mirror. She didn't hear the knock on the door, or the creaking of the old wood as it opened.

"Harley?" Montoya's concerned voice cut through Harley's intensity, "What are you doing? It's 1:00 am."

"Sorry." Harley finally broke her staring contest with the mirror, "Did I wake you up?"

"No." Montoya said, "The phone did."

Harley's eyes brightened, "Y/n?"

Montoya nodded, and Harley rushed past her and down the stairs. She jumped down the last four steps, and hurried over to the phone. It was an old timey landline.

"Y/n?" Harley breathed,

"Harley!" Harley smiled at how excited and relieved the other voice sounded, "God it's so good to hear you. You're not hurt are you? You're safe."

Harley bit her lip, "I'm fine. I'm with the Birds."

"And Cass is safe too?"

"Yep. We're all ok." Harley assured her.

There was a comfortable silence, before y/n proceeded, "I miss you so much."

"Where are you?" Harley asked, "Are you safe?"

"I'm fine. I can't really tell you where I am, but I promise I will as soon as I see you." Y/n promised.

"When are you coming home?" Harley frowned thoughtfully.

"As soon as I can, I promise." Y/n said, "There's just something I have to take care of first."

"Oh no." Harley's frown deepened, "You're not getting yourself into trouble without me are you?"

"Of course not." y/n laughed, "I'm just... with a friend."

Harley chided, "Y/n, you don't have friends. What are you up to?"

Y/n laughed, "You got me. But really, it's nothing I can't handle, and I'll be home soon to tell you all about it. I have to go, but I didn't want you to worry."

"Very reassuring." Harley said sarcastically.

"Sorry." Y/n chuckled, "I love you."

"I love you too." The words brought the smile back to Harley's face.

"I'm sorry, I really do have to go." Y/n sighed.

After several more "I love yous" and versions of "goodbye" y/n finally hung up. Harley put the phone back on it's stand, and flopped down on the couch. Montoya came downstairs and sat next to Harley.

"So..." Montoya started, "She's ok?"

"She's fine." Harley confirmed.

"She's coming home?"

"No."

"No?" Montoya's eyebrows shot up.

"She said she has something to take care of."

Montoya shook her head, "That's Ace for you. It's always something."

"That's the problem." Harley muttered.

"What was that?" Montoya pressed.

Harley sighed, "Nothing."

Montoya waited until Harley continued, "It's just... she'll stop eventually right? She'll come home and we can live life? Are we still allowed to have that?"

"To have a life outside of Gotham chaos?" Montoya studied Harley, "Is that what you want?"

Harley thought back to her first encounter with Enchantress. Enchantress had shown her a vision of her and the Joker living a normal life with a family and everything. It was so peaceful. That never would have been possible with the Joker, but maybe with y/n... At the same time, when she tried to imagine giving up the adventure, the danger, the suspense, she didn't feel right.

"I don't know." She replied, "Whatever type of life I live, I want y/n to be in it. And if that means suicide missions every weekend, that's ok with me. As long as we're in it together."

After that there wasn't much to say. The two sat quietly, looking out the window. Gotham city's lights looked so far away from the Bertinelli Mansion. Just twinkling lights in the distance.
