CHAPTER SEVEN
When I woke up on this Sunday morning, my family was getting ready for church. My dad asked me if I was coming with, but I didn't want to. I still had my reservations on the existence of God. They left for church and I had a shower. When I was done getting dressed in my baggy jeans, grey tank top and hoodie, my phone rang. I looked at the caller ID and it was a private number.
"Angelique here, talk to me", I said.
Silence...
"Hello. You're on the line", I said, chuckling quietly.
Silence...
"Uh... Hello", I said and I heard someone huff a breath and the call was disconnected. I looked at my phone. That was weird.
I went to make myself breakfast. As I was eating, my phone rang again and it was a private number again.
"Hello. I think you've got the wrong number", I said, answering the phone.
Breathing...
"I know someone's on the phone, okay? You're breathing loudly. You've got the wrong number", I said and disconnected the call. I sighed and put my phone down.
After I had finished eating my breakfast, I went up to my room and did the homework I got for English, Maths and Afrikaans. I was playing music; Beethoven's symphonies because, classical music calmed me down and helped me concentrate better.
I walked into the music room my dad made for me in the basement. Every Sunday, I would come down here and play music and sing, grabbing the opportunity of having the house to myself. I wondered what my parents would think if they found out I could sing.
"Angelique! Baby, we're home", I heard my mom yell from upstairs. I got up and ran up the stairs.
"Hi mom", I said when I spotted her.
"Hi baby. I invited the Robinson's for lunch. Will you help me make lunch?" she asked, smiling. I smiled.
"Sure", I said and grabbed her arm, pulling her into the kitchen. I was busy setting the table when the doorbell chimed. They're here; I thought and let out a groan.
"I'll get it", chorused my mother.
"Now, relax honey. We don't want to scare our guests away, right?" I heard my dad say to my mom.
"You say that like I know how to relax", she said. She giggled at something and I wished that she wouldn't embarrass me or the family. I heard the door opening and my mom greeted the Robinsons with much excitement. "Welcome to our home".
"Thank you so much, Rachel. You have a very beautiful home", I heard Bradley's mom say. I stepped out of the dining room and was tackled into a hug by Ashley.
"Hey, sis", she said, while she crashed my ribs.
"I – can't – breath", I managed to say. She let go of me and held me at arm's length. "Hi Ashley", I said. Ashley smiled and I couldn't help but return the smile.
"Move Ash", Bradley said and gave Ashley a little push to the side. "Hi Angel", he said, looking into my eyes, smiling his heart-stopping smile. My breathing hitched and I felt like I was floating. When Bradley looked at me like that, it was like I was the only girl in the world.
