CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
The school holidays were over, which meant that I was going to see my best friend when I got home. I was excited, but not only for that. Bradley and I managed to convince John to move to Newcastle with us. We did a conference call with his parents, since they were not living together, and our argument was that, John was always alone at the house with them going on a lot of business trips, so they might as well allow him to move to another province, where he won’t be alone all the time. His dad was a little harder to convince, but we did, however, we won him over in the end. So, John was starting school with us when school re-opened.
The Robinson’s, John and I travelled home two days before school opened, so today was Sunday. We were currently having lunch after that day’s church service. I had an uneasy feeling humming in the background; like some danger was lurking. I didn’t pay much attention to it though. It must have been that I was back where my stalker lived, so maybe that’s why I was feeling slightly uncomfortable.
After lunch at the Robinson’s, my family and I went home. I needed to get some rest before school the next day. Once we were home, I threw the clothes I took to Joburg with me into the washing machine. While those were being washed, I took a hot shower to ease off the knots in my neck and shoulders.
After my shower, I wore Bradley’s t-shirt and short pyjama bottoms. Before I went to sleep, I asked my mom to hang my washing tomorrow morning. I fell asleep, feeling excited because I was seeing my friends the next day.
I was currently sitting with my excited group of friends. Why were we excited? Well, that’s because Thabo and Tyler had set a date for their wedding. I was going to help Tyler plan her wedding, as the maid of honour. They were getting married a week after our matric dance. I was very excited that she was finally going to get married. I had the 30th of November marked on my calendar. That day was going to be so special.
Thabo’s father also insisted on paying lobola, otherwise known as dowry, for Tyler, even though it wasn’t part of the Afrikaans culture. He said he wouldn’t feel right having a daughter in-law that he didn’t pay lobola for. I, for one, was plenty excited about the whole lobola negotiation ceremony that was going to take place during our October school holidays. I was going to learn something about the black culture that was fascinating to me.
After school I called Lindsay, asking her to help me organize a sleepover for my female friends. By the way, Lindsay had moved out a few days ago because, her house renovations were already done. Her house definitely looked like Nate Berkus had designed it. She and Donald were getting married in December. Lindsay said that I was her best friend, so I was to be her maid of honour as well. She hired a wedding planner; the best in town. I was excited to see what he had planned. Yes, he. He was a gay wedding planner and he was good at what he did.
Lindsay told me that Natasha was graduating in her LLB degree in a week’s time and, Vanessa had a year left for her degree in medicine. Natasha got the brain for law like our dad and Vanessa was more on our granddad’s profession. My mom was business minded, and that was what I was as well. So, I knew that I didn’t want to work for anyone. I applied for the Bachelor of Commerce degree in Intrapreneurial Management at the University of Johannesburg and I was patiently waiting for a reply. Bradley got a sport scholarship from the University of Witwatersrand, which meant, we were both moving to Johannesburg, if I got accepted. I did apply to other universities in case the University of Johannesburg did not accept me. Bradley thought I was absurd to think that I wouldn’t get accepted with marks like mine.
