The day was spent with small talk, since your main task at your job is to stock the shelves you were on your laptop most of the time, ordering re-stocks of some items that are running out.
You were working at the kitchen counter so you can supervise Jeff's so far successful attempt at cooking.
"Ey what do you think we should name the cat?" You ask out of the blue, turning away from the counter to stare at the feline that was laying on the floor beside your chair.
"I'dunno, name it skittles or something." He shrugged after glancing at you.
"That's stupid. I like it." You grin, picking up the cat and scratching his head. Your phone rang just as you were about to go back to work.
"One second.. Its mom." You excuse yourself and leave to go into another room. He replied with a silent nod before resuming whatever he was doing before.
You walked to the stairs and stood at the bottom, having already answered the phone. "Hey moma, how's it going?" You ask, figuring it was just her checking up on you.
"Hey hun.. um, Rem got into a bit of an accident.. We didn't want to stress you but he passed away this morning, I called you when I found out but you didn't answer the first time." Her tired voice said, the grip on your phone tightened, your hands instantly becoming sweaty.
"What do you mean?.. Mom, this isn't funny, stop joking!" You frantically say, hoping it was just a cruel joke.
"It's not sweetie, I'm sorry. Call us if you need anything okay? We'll be available." She practically whispered as your whole body trembled.
"..O-oh.. Okay, okay thanks.." You pushed out a goodbye and that you 'will be there tomorrow' before hanging up.
Everything felt heavy, you slumped yourself backwards onto the stairs, clenching your knees to your chest.
Sobs and hiccups left your mouth as all you could do was sit there and be swallowed by grief.
You were so distraught that you failed to notice someone sitting on the stairs next to you. "Hey..... What happened?" You look up to see the face you've grown to be very fond of.
You tried explaining the call but your frantic crying was muffling every attempt at speaking, you soon enough gave up and dipped your tear stained face back into your knees.
Shuffling was heard as arms snaked around your torso in an awkward attempt at consoling. At that point you felt too defeated to care, slifting in your place slightly to return his shy hug.
"D'you wanna talk about it?" He said, soothingly rubbing your back. You shook your head, too drained to even give a verbal answer.
"Okay. You go sit down somewhere more comfy, I'll be right back." He pats your shoulder and helps you get up before disappearing off into another room.
You dragged yourself back into the living room, flopping onto the area you were previously sleeping in and curling into a ball, feeling absolutely hopeless.
A bottle of water was placed on the coffee table in front of you with Jeff sitting in front of the couch, his back facing away from you.
"You should drink, you're gonna get dehydrated from all that crying." He tried comforting you, leaning back a bit to look at you.
"Thanks.." You said, voice still hoarse as you tried rubbing away your tears. "I'm gonna go back to visit my family tomorrow, are you gonna be fine on your own?" You ask after drinking some of the water, still hiccuping every once in a while.
"Don't worry about me right now, you just get yourself in check, okay? I can handle myself just fine." He gives you a reassuring smile, reaching out to hold your hand.
As said the next day you woke up, ready to head off to your parents house as soon as you ate your breakfast.
"Call me if anything happens." He said as you were putting on your coat.
"Alright, I will. See you later tonight, don't stay up waiting. Okay bye I love you." You nodded quickly, rushing to get to your parent's place as soon as possible.
Completely missing the flustered expression that painted Jeff's face.
