The air was warm, the humidity was making your skin sticky as you leaned back onto your hands on the grassy hill. Phillip's hands grazed yours as he leaned back to join you. Although you two had been dating since freshman year, there was a new awkwardness between you both tonight as the sun set over the hills.

"Did you get in?" his voice just barely above a whisper as he tilted his head to face you. Your fingers picked at the grass trying to avoid his eyes. Phillip, making this impossible, snuck his finger under your chin and lifted your head up to face him. "I won't be mad, promise," he smiled trying to reassure you. You lifted your hips slightly pulling an envelope out of your back pocket and handing it to him. Your eyes dropped almost immediately, too scared to see his reaction.

You were already well aware you were accepted and with a great scholarship too. It was too good to pass up. Phillip's eyes scanned the envelope and unfolded it, you can see his eyes skimming across the words. "Babe, this is amazing, congrats," his hand dropped to your thigh giving it a tight squeeze. "Are you going?"

"I think so,"

"Oh, okay," he paused to think for a moment, "We can meet up on the weekends, and you can maybe visit me or I can visit you when I get a chance... I'm not sure how lenient the military is but we can make it work," he rambled on.

"Phil,"

"Plus we have all of summer, and then the holidays too,"

"Phillip," you said a bit louder to get him to stop. He looked up, catching your eyes, he knew what was coming. You both did. "It's too much for us, it's too much for me,"

"We can make it work,"

"I'll be halfway across the country, and you're going into the military," you huffed out, "I won't even be able to text you about my day, I can't do that," tears brimmed your eyes as you thought about the idea.

"Hey don't cry beautiful," despite the single tear rolling down his cheek, he offered a smile. "We'll find each other again, yeah?" This time you were unable to answer as a steady stream of tears flowed down your cheeks. Phillip pulled you into a hug, wrapping his arms around you tightly and placing a small kiss on your forehead.

The two of you lay on the grassy hill way past the sunset, the sky littered with stars and pale moonlight lit up the surrounding area. "We should probably head home," you mumbled into his chest as you snuggled closer trying to savor the moment.

"Just a few more minutes please," Phillip whispered back, his hand lightly stroking your hair as he looked up at the sky. Time passed and you both finally decided it was time to go, which meant it was time to say goodbye. Phillip helped you up off the grass and pulled you in for one last hug. "See you soon yeah?", you nodded despite not knowing when soon was. He pulled you in, giving you a final kiss goodbye before you both went your separate ways.

It had been years since Phillip Graves had crossed your mind, a high school boyfriend long forgotten along with your childhood. That was until you were back home visiting your parents and running some errands when you saw a vaguely familiar blonde-headed man in the store.

Your stomach churned at the idea of seeing him again, not that things ended badly, but the nerves of seeing the man everyone thought you were going to marry in person again. In an attempt to avoid him, you wove through the aisles and kept your head down. Hoping you lost him you stopped at the produce section, skimming through the apples trying to pick the best one.

"Well look who it is," the southern drawl burned your ears as you flinched lightly at the sound. Your attempt of going unnoticed massively failed as he seemed to find you.

"Phillip, hi," you smiled politely, unsure how to act. He carried a small basket as he smiled back at you.

Phillip Graves looked good, better than you remember him looking. He sported a blue button-up, rolled up to his elbows, and the perfect shade of dark blue jeans. His dirty blonde hair was styled in a way to make it look like he didn't care, but you knew he did. The longer you looked, taking in the older Phillip, the more you noticed. The current standout was the long scar that stretched from his ear to his cheek. Always the fighter you thought to yourself.

"You look..." he drifted off trying to find the words, "Amazin' wow,"

"You too Phil, you look great. How have you been? Still in the military, I presume?"

"Oh you know it doll," he chuckled as he let the pet name roll off his tongue, just like old times. You felt your face heat up as he continued on. "Been good I guess, better now that I'm seein' you. Whaddya doin' back home?" he rubbed his jaw as he spoke.

"Just visiting my parents, had to run some errands for them," you shrugged as you motioned towards the cart filled with groceries.

"Tell them I said 'hi' won't ya,"

"I will, I'm sure they'd love to hear from you,"

You both let out a small chuckle before silence fell between the two of you again. Phillip's eyes soften as he gave you a sympathetic smile, almost as sorry for not keeping in touch all these years. Returning the smile, your eyes darted to the ground as you felt tears forming. Quickly you tried to dry your eyes before any of the tears could escape.

"Hey, hey," Phillip walked closer to you, rubbing your shoulder. "It's okay, I'm here. What's wrong?"

"It's nothing, I'm just being silly," you tried to laugh it off but you forgot how well he knew you. It was almost as if you were back on that grassy hill as Phillip snuck his fingers under your chin, lifting your head up to face him. Those damn blue eyes were always able to ground you, no matter how upset you were.

"You can tell me," his voice was soft as if you two were the only ones around.

"Phil, we're in a grocery store," as his hand dropped from your face you were quick to react, grabbing it and giving it a light squeeze. "I'm okay, promise. Just happy to see you is all,"

"I want to say I believe you darlin' but I just can't," he chuckled, squeezing your hand back. He paused for a moment before speaking again, still holding your hand. "How 'bout this, let's get dinner, catch up? Not in the grocery store,"

"I would like that very much,"

"Then it's a date," he lifted your hand up placing a small kiss to the back of it, "I'll pick you up at 8,"

"I'll see you then Phillip Graves,"
