The next morning, James slowly opened his eyes and stretched, letting out a big yawn. Peter watching him from the mirror, his fingers looping around his tie.
"Morning, Prongs" Peter greeted him with a smile.
Feeling happy at the though of seeing Severus today, James smiled back but wider "Good morning, Wormtail. Where are the others?"
Just then, Remus emerged from the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his hips. His hair was wet and drops of water trickled down his body. James' smile faltered for a moment as he noticed how lean his body is. Remus was a good-looking guy who could easily attract all the girls if he ever tried. He wondered what was stopping him or if he was just shy
"Get ready, Prongs. Breakfast ends in 30 minutes" Remus said, giving him a small smile.
"Oh, right. If i take too long, you guys can go ahead" James let his uniform float behind him so he could just change in the bathroom.
After taking a shower, James changed into his robes. He wonder how he was going to face Sirius after last night. Maybe he'll say nothing like Peter did. It really doesn't matter, as long as James wasn't upset at them. However, he hoped his friends would change their behavior towards Severus.
The room was empty when he walked out of the bathroom. James quickly cast a 'Tempus' spell and realized there were only 15 minutes left. He hurriedly grabbed his bag and left the dormitory.
He passed a few students in the hallways heading to their class. James kept running until he arrived in the Great Hall. There were only a few people left, including his friends. His eyes travelled to the Slytherin table, where he spotted Severus.
Their eyes locked, and James gave him a small smile. Severus looked at him blankly, then nodded and returned to his meal. James had to control himself not to show his excitement because his friends were watching. He sat down beside Remus and began eating, ignoring their surprised expressions.
"What was that, James?" Sirius asked, dropping his spoon onto his plate "A friendly exchange with Snivellus? I never thought I'd see the day." A smirked appeared on his face.
James simply shrugged, which pissed Sirius. Remus looked at him curiously over his shoulder, while Peter took a slow bite of his sausage.
Without looking at them, James responded "Well, get ready because you'll be seeing it everyday"
Remus made a face of recognition as he took a sip of his juice. His thoughts went back to last night when James had entered their room with a smile on his face. He probably made amends with Snape from how happy he looked and Remus must've mistaken the love on his look. He was impressed how fast it was considering the deep hatred that existed between them.
"No way in hell you're telling the truth" Sirius scoffed, disbelief evident in his tone "Snape and James becoming friends? That's like saying Filch got a girlfriend"
Remus stifled a chuckle behind his hand, while Peter roared with laughter, tears welling up in his eyes. Even James, who was slightly disappointed, couldn't help but join in.
"Just imagine! I bet he's really romantic when it comes to his partner. He kisses her and whispers sweet nothings in her ear while they-" Peter was suddenly interrupted by Sirius gagging.
"Ew, ew, ew. I don't have to hear any of that, Wormtail" Sirius exclaimed, his face contorted in disgust "Great, i've lost my appetite" He added dramatically.
"You just gave us a nightmare that will take a year to forget. I can't believe you just did that" James gave him a look that matches Sirius'. Peter's laughter doubled.
Remus shook his head with a smile "You guys are overreacting. Things aren't impossible, therefore, Filch can find love. The same goes for James and Severus, they could develop a friendship"
James lightly patted Remus on the back, his eyes showing gratitude. He would forever be grateful for Remus.
"The day that happens is the day the sun explodes" Sirius smirked "You two are like water and oil, never meant to be mixed"
James felt a pang on his chest. He couldn't help but agree with Sirius. There were differences between him and Severus, and their past encounters had been far from pleasant. It would be naive to think that their path to friendship would be smooth and effortless.
But James already knew that, and he's ready for the challenges that lay ahead. Nothing is going to stop him, even if it required a massive amount of patience.
"Whatever you say, Sirius" James sighed as he glanced at the Slytherin table once more, but Severus wasn't sitting there anymore.
Now that he thought about it, not a single soul was present and it was oddly quiet in the Great Hall besides them. That's when James realized that they were supposed to be in class.
"Idiots!" Remus exclaimed, slamming his hands on the table as he stood up "We have transfigurations!"
All three of them scrambled to their feet, their eyes wide with panic. They had been so focused in their conversation that they had lost track of time.
"Professor McGonagall is going to kill us" Peter muttered to himself in dread as Sirius dragged him by the arm, trailing behind James, who was following Remus as he ran like his life depended on it. Although it is, he couldn't afford being late.
Sirius only laughed at the situation while James cracked a smile. Peter wasn't worried about being late, he was worried about the detention. He didn't want to spend his free time doing chores. He crossed his fingers and hoped that McGonagall was in a good mood.
When they entered the classroom, they found a silver tabby cat sitting ontop of the desk. One could easily mistake it for a normal cat, but the glasses perched on it's nose suggested otherwise.
The Marauders awkwardly shuffled their way to their seats, muttering apologies. Their classmates watched with amusement, enjoying their embarrassment.
Professor McGonagall transformed back into her human form, her eyes glaring at them "Five points each deducted from Gryffindor for being incompetent"
In the middle of groans from the Gryffindor students, James' gaze wandered around the room, searching for a familiar face. He felt a flicker of joy when he spotted Severus sitting at the front on the other side. Lily was beside him, frowning at the lost points
Their eyes met, and James gave him a small wave on top of his desk. Severus acknowledge him with a brief nod and a hint of smile before turning his attention back to the professor in front. James did the same, feeling a flutter of butterflies in his stomach.
