While Professor McGonagall continued her lesson, James glanced at Severus from time to time. Sirius was speaking beside him, and James did his best to listen and respond. The conversation only ended when McGonagall demonstrated the transfiguration of a ferret into a feather duster.
Transfigurations were easy for James. As long as he cast the spell and performed the movements correctly, there would be no problems in transforming an object. That's why he easily completed the task at hand. A satisfied smile spread across his face, and he couldn't stealing a glimpse at Severus.
As expected, he had successfully transfigured the animal. Severus looked at him after watching Lily, who had also succeeded. James gave him a thumbs-up, and in response, Severus raised an eyebrow. A snort escaped him, making Sirius look up from his ferret with a weird look.
"You alright?" He asked, and James nodded, offering help so Sirius could tear away from whatever he found amusing.
The class ended with everyone passing the practical test. The next subject was charms, which James dreaded since Severus wasn't in his class, and Sirius had Defense the Dark Arts with Remus. Although he had Peter so that made things less problematic.
He spent the entire class with half of his soul gone, and his sanity was holding on for dear life. James was only being dramatic because he finished his work early and had nothing left to do. To make things worse, Peter refused to talk to him until he was done. So all James did was sulk in his seat and wait for the class to end.
He dragged Peter to the Great Hall, where they spotted Sirius and Remus already at the table. James hadn't seen Severus. The boy preferred to read rather than eat.
James presumed that he was at his usual hang out place outside on the school grounds, sitting under his signature tree. Lily was eating beside Remus, so that must have meant Severus was alone.
Peter slid in beside Sirius and began feasting, while James remained on his feet and grabbed a small plate. He stacked three donuts on top, each with a different flavor.
Sirius looked at him warily before asking "What are you doing?"
"Grabbing food, i'll eat somewhere" He responded. Before Sirius could ask another question, James was already off.
They watched his figure until he disappeared from their sight in silence.
"What's with that guy?" Sirius asked, frowning. Remus had an idea of where he was going but decided to keep his mouth shut.
Lily looked around for a second before leaning in towards the boys "Has James told you about Severus?"
The three perked up, stopping at what they were doing.
"Yeah, we've been talking about Sniv-Snape recently. James wanted us to leave him alone" Sirius said, and Peter nodded.
Lily was stunned, not believing what she heard "Pardon?"
"Exactly my first reaction!" Sirius barked out a laugh "Thought he was bluffing at first but-" Then he shrugged "He seems genuine about it"
"Why did you ask?" Peter chimed in.
Earlier in the morning, Severus and Lily had met up to walk together in the Great Hall. Severus had told her the night before about James asking for forgiveness. Lily didn't trust James and thought there was something behind it. But now that he had talked to his friends about Severus, she couldn't help but doubt herself. Lily shared the information without going into much details.
"Has James said something what made him change his mind?" She questioned.
"'It's time to be fucking mature' he said. Though i believe that wasn't the main reason" Sirius answered with a huff "You know what i think?"
