The Dodgers started the season on the road. A ten-game road trip spanning twelve days was unusual at the beginning of the season but here Frank was heading to the airport.

"Behave. One bad report..."

"When have I ever been that bad Frank?" Mary put her hand on hip and gave him the patent "you're an idiot" look.

Frank sighed. "Never. Alright Nug, I'll call when I get to the hotel." He hugged his niece and kissed the top of her head. "See you in two weeks."

He hugged Scott. "I left some of the team numbers on the desk. If you can't reach me, use the list."

"I know the drill. Not my first rodeo," Scott said.

"Yeah, yeah." He waved him off. He got into his Camero and took off to the airport.

A couple of days into the trip, Scott received a call from Mary's school. "Hello?"

"Hello, is this Mr. Adler or Mr. Evans."

"This is Mr. Evans."

"Oh, well I'm Mrs. Hathaway, the nurse at Sunshine Prep. Mary is in my office and she is running a fever and threw up. I think it's best she went home for the day."

"Sure, I'll be there in ten."

"See you soon."

Scott hung up and debated calling Frank. No, I'll wait until morning, Scott thought as he headed out to the car. After picking up Mary, he headed to the store for some juice and crackers. Once she was in bed, he gave her some fever reducer, some crackers and liquids. He settled to watch Frank play. An hour into the game, he heard a soft whimper. Scott went to Mary's room. "Mary?"

She thrashed in her sleep, soft moans of pain coming from her mouth. Scott touched her forehead, and it was like fire. The medicine should have worked by now, so something was definitely wrong. He raced over to the desk and saw the numbers. His eyes landed on one of them. It would be a risk, but he needed answers before he called Frank.

"Hello?"

"Hi, Dr. Hernandez, this is Scott Evans. I'm Frank Adler's nanny and I have a problem."

"What is the problem?"

"It's Mary. I got a call from her school, and she had thrown up and was running a high fever. I gave her meds and fluids, but the fever is not coming down."

Abby's heart sank to her stomach. "Ok, I'lll be right there. What the address?"

As Abby plugged in the address, she realized that Frank didn't live far from her. Just 10 minutes up the coast. She raced to the house, got through the gate and up to the house. When she walked up the door flew open. "Dr. Hernandez?"

"Hi. Call me Abby".

"Scott." They shook hands briefly. "She's in here." He began to walk quickly through the house and into Mary's bedroom.

Abby crouched down and felt Mary's head. "Oh yeah, this is high." She used her forehead thermometer to get a reading. "103, that's not good. Get me a cool washcloth," she ordered Scott. As she checked Mary's eyes and mouth, her eyes fluttered open. "Abby?"

"Hi sweet girl. How are you feeling?"

"Everything hurts," she whimpered.

"I know Nugget. Try having some water." Mary sipped but immediately threw it back up, unable to swallow or keep it in. "Ok, sweetheart. Time to go." She stood up and faced Scott. "We need to take her to the emergency room. She needs fluids and IV medication."
