"It's not about being right or wrong, it's about following the rules."
"Rules are for fools with no imagination."
"And what does that make you?"
"A genius with an attitude problem."
Evie awoke abruptly to a darkened bedroom to the sound of the quiet banter of Dr. House and his associates. Rolling over in her sheets, she stretches her arms out with a small groan. And then it hits her. She sits up in bed, wide eyed. Her room was dark and it was dark outside. "Shit, shit, shit!" Evie frantically searches around her bed for her phone and eventually finds it buried in the sheets. And to her dismay, there were several missed texts from Josh.
It was now 6:38pm and she had no ingredients to cook with. "Hey, just checking to see if you're okay! I'm heading home now." Josh had sent that text about an hour ago. Evie opens up their conversation to see that he'd indeed sent her a recipe. A vegan pasta dish with broccoli and spinach. Something she would have thought was good, but the nausea she'd felt earlier was creeping back up on her. "Sorry, I fell asleep earlier. Not feeling very well." Josh read the text instantly and she got her response seconds later.
"Weren't you just worried about me having COVID? XD You have a fever or anything?"
Did she have a fever? She didn't feel cold nor hot and her eyes weren't burning which were clear indicators that she would have a fever. Evie reluctantly slides out of bed and heads out into the hallway to the bathroom. While digging through the open drawers, Kelsey emerged from the living area with a plate of Chinese food in her hand. "Hey girl," she greets her friend, "You doing okay? You've been asleep like...all day."
"Yeah I know," Evie extracts the thermometer from the back of the drawer and pulls it out of the plastic container that it was inside of, "I started watching House and then I just... passed out. I still kinda feel shitty." Along with the nausea, there was a small headache growing in her temple coupled with an odd pressure down below in her pelvic area like her period was starting. She really just wanted to go back to sleep. Popping the thermometer in her mouth, Evie heads back into the living room area. "Are you hungry?" Kelsey was following her friend close behind, "I ordered Chinese. I wasn't gonna get you any since you were cooking tonight but I ended up getting one anyway when you weren't awake by five."
The thermometer beeps and unsurprisingly, the numbers flashing back at her indicated that she was completely fine. "Then why do I feel like shit?" Evie grumbled under her breath. She takes a seat down on the couch in the living room, contemplating just how expired the cheese she'd eaten was. She'd been under the impression most of her life that cheese and mold were commonly together. It was a part of the cheese making process. You just cut the bad parts off and eat it. Maybe she'd missed a spot? But then again, how would a small bit of mold make her feel this sick?
"Hello?" Kelsey's voice echoed inside her head and when she looked up, there was a take out container in her face, "I got you beef and broccoli. Did you hear me?"
"Yes, I heard you." Evie's palms were pressed firmly against her forehead. The headache was setting in. It had to be COVID. Slowly, her palms are brought down over her face, dragging her fingers across her skin, "I'm just– freaking out. I... This has to be that new virus. I think my chest is starting to hurt now."
"And I think you're just freaking out," Kelsey shakes the takeout box a bit, "You do this every time you get the flu."
Evie reluctantly takes the box. She was panicking, but she was kind of hungry. Kelsey takes a seat back on the recliner across from her, "Worse comes to worse, you can go to urgent care tomorrow. I don't think Vish'll care much. If anything it's probably just food poisoning."
