Evie must've spent a good portion of the night texting this Josh guy. When she awoke the next morning, she was shocked to find herself laying flat out on her bed covered with only a thin blanket. She pushed herself up into a seated position while drowsily feeling around the bed for her phone. 'Damn,' Evie thought to herself, 'I don't remember falling asleep last night. I hope Josh isn't upset with me...'
She didn't remember if she told him goodnight or not. It wasn't like her to end a conversation abruptly— even if it was through something as benign as texting. After a few moments of searching she realized her phone wasn't amongst the sheets and had most likely fallen off the bed at some point in time during the night. Now she'd actually have to get out of bed. Evie stretched out her arms again with a long yawn before reluctantly getting up onto her feet. Upon rounding the corner, she found that her cellphone was indeed lying face flat on the floor in between the shaggy fibers of her rug.
'Lucky it didn't break... again.'
Dusting the phone off, Evie curiously skims through her notifications while walking towards the kitchen area. At the bottom of the notifications was a text from Josh at around 1am reading, "Yeah, my job does keep me on the road. Wasn't always like that though."
Seeing the message made her heart flutter a bit. When she woke up, it had almost felt like last night had been some weird fever dream she'd conjured up with her lonely mind. Of course she wanted a boyfriend. Kelsey may nag her endlessly and she'd deny it each time but... it felt good to talk to a guy again. A smart one too. While scrolling through the previous conversation, Evie puts her coffee together one handed. They had talked a long time about history last night, mostly involving architecture. Josh told her about the places he was hoping to see soon, and Evie joked about how the sandwich shop was as far as she'd be going that summer. They swapped info back and forth; he also could play guitar, loved to make short films and write scripts. Reading was a favorite pastime of his, he enjoyed meditation and occasionally smoking. Evie explained she was new to Nashville, only having been here a year after moving from Colorado and was on the fence about joining art school.
"Well, this is just my opinion so take it as you will, but I think you have a true talent," Josh had said, "I'm only good at buildings. People still baffle me."
Evie fixed her cup of coffee and sat down on the couch in the living room to catch a tail end of the morning news. 'I wonder what I should say, since I didn't tell him goodnight last night...' Evie wondered to herself, 'I hope he doesn't think I'm rude.'
She hesitates a moment with her thumb hovering over the keyboard. On the one hand, she knew it was silly to be worried about what he'd think. It was more likely he wouldn't care more than he would and she knew that but the irrational part of her couldn't shake the thought of being ghosted. Josh was really nice so far. It wouldn't break her heart if he never replied back but she would definitely be sad. They had... a connection. Pushing through her anxious worried, Evie types a quick message:
"Hey, sorry for not replying last night. I stayed up too late talking and I must've fallen asleep waiting for a reply. :'(."
Poor excuse in her opinion but it would do. She puts the phone down and continues watching the news while contemplating breakfast. It was Saturday, one of her few days off, and she usually tried to spend her off days being productive. There were usually some chores that needed to be done but today and usually, Evie didn't mind having most of the housework fall back on her. She was much better at housekeeping than Kelsey was anyway and it made time pass by that much quicker. But today, Evie felt kinda lazy. Maybe it was time for one of those boring days where you don't take off your pajama pants and just lounge around the apartment. Her phone buzzed, the vibration knocking her out of her thoughts and she quickly scrambled to her phone.
