"Sign here, here, and here," the gruff, overweight man pointed to the three lines requiring her signature without even glancing up at her. Kailani brushed her light brown hair out of her eyes, grabbed a pen and hesitated before signing.
"Why was I selected?" The question left her mouth before she could stop it.
"I don't know lady. I just do the paperwork," He glared at her for a moment before looking startled. Kai recognized the look. She got it often. She had very light amber eyes that often looked almost orange and took people by surprise. She raised her eyebrows at his tone and demeanor before shrugging and signed where he requested. Once she was finished, the man grabbed the papers and put them in a box. "Make sure to collect all your things. Portkey leaves in thirty minutes. Please make sure that you are outside of the building in the appropriate place." He didn't glance up at her again as he handed her an old handkerchief that held something wrapped tightly.
Kai opened the handkerchief and saw a ragged, old button, laying on the cloth in her palm. Hard to believe that this boring, useless object would take her to her next adventure. She pocketed the kerchief, muttered her thanks to the awful man, and grabbed her duffel bag before heading out of the ministry building.
She shivered when the brisk wind bit into her. She quickly spotted the portkey zone. It was a 3x3 meter square with a sign that said "Porkey and Apparation Zone". She pursed her lips at the idea of standing in the wind waiting for the portkey to leave. "Nope," she turned on her heel and walked back into the building. She was not about to spend the next twenty minutes waiting outside in the freezing London weather in the middle of March. She looked to her right and spotted a coffee shop, checking her watch to double check the time before heading that way.
"Hello dear. What can I get you today?" The older woman running the cart asked her kindly.
"A hot latte please," Kai smiled in gratitude before handing over her money. She took her coffee and went to sit on a bench near the door. Her mind went back to the porkey in her pocket. She was still confused on how she was in the position she was in. She was finally going to have her dream job. She would get to treat and heal magical creatures and care for them. She was going to get to work with dragons. And she would get paid. It almost didn't feel real. Sure she was more than qualified, but there were far more witches and wizards that had been doing this longer than she had. She found it hard to believe that she would have been selected out of all the applicants. She didn't have any extensive or well-known internships on her resume. She really only put the year she had lived in Asia. She had simply passed the exam.
She glanced down at her watch and took a last sip of her coffee before throwing it in the trash and rushing out the door. She barely made it to the portkey zone with her hand in her pocket before she was swept up and felt her stomach drop. She hated magical travel. It didn't matter whether it was apparation or a portkey. It was awful. She felt like she was being pulled in a dozen different directions, and it made her instantly want to vomit. Kai glanced down and realized she wasn't traveling anymore and let go of the portkey. She braced herself for the fall and rolled, but still groaned as she hit the ground. She really hated magical travel.
Standing up, she brushed herself off, looking around at where she had landed. She didn't really get a whole lot of information from the man at the ministry, but the portkey seemed to have brought her to the entrance of the sanctuary. She looked up, seeing a wrought-iron gate with "Paradisul Balaur" written in a bold design.
"Dragon Paradise," she muttered to herself. "Not very original." She internally rolled her eyes and pushed open the gate, securing her duffle more securely over her shoulder before steeling herself for whatever she might find on the other side.
