Her momentary relief of seeing him back, fell away like a rock slide when she took in his appearance, quickly being replaced with concern.
"You look like hell," she drawled, sounding uninterested. Her eyes gave her away though, raking over his body and quietly taking stock of his injuries. He had deep cuts everywhere and one bad burn on his leg. His clothes were torn and bloody and Kai couldn't make heads or tails of where his worst injuries were.
"Just do the fucking job I pay you for," Charlie grunted, leaning heavily on her counter. He clearly wasn't in a joking mood. She nodded curtly and gently nudged him toward her bed. He raised and eyebrow, "Is that what I'm paying you for? Interesting."
Kai rolled her eyes, picking up on his innuendo. Apparently he was in a joking mood. "Sit," She muttered through tight lips. The man was literally always infuriating. "I just need some space to work."
He gave only a small grin, laced with pain, as he took a seat on the edge of her bed. She went to the small closet and pulled out her emergency kit before walking over and standing between his legs. She pulled on a pair of gloves, carefully placed her hands on his face, two fingers on his temples and gently sent her magic into his body.
Following the magic, she took stock of his injuries. Many of the cuts were deep with the worst three on his back. He had a significant burn on his leg. Fuck. This was going to take her all night.
Reaching into her body, she tugged at her magic, healing the smaller cuts on his chest first. They weren't deep and were relatively quick fixes.
"Take off your shirt and lay down on your stomach please," she muttered through gritted teeth. She didn't know how to handle a shirtless Charlie in her bed. That's not true.. She knew exactly how she wanted to handle it. She had to keep reminding herself to be professional. He didn't feel the same way about her, and just because she lusted after him like an animal in heat, didn't mean she got to act on it.
Charlie's eyes darkened at her words, and her breath caught as he maintained eye contact, slowly pulling the tattered shirt over his head. There was a challenge and a question in his eyes, as if asking her, if at another time, under different circumstances, if the line drawn in the sand between them as professionals might get swept away by a wave of physical connection.
She gulped at the look in his eyes, choosing to ignore it. She was fine lusting after Charlie as an unrequited feeling. She had no idea what she would do if he were to actually follow through. She refocused on work and her eyes roamed over his body, looking for injuries, obviously. But she wasn't going to lie and say that she didn't enjoy the view.
He groaned as he laid down on his stomach, leaving his legs off the bed to prevent the burn from touching the sheets. She pursed her lips.
"What happened?" She lightly placed her hands on his firm back, one lower and one higher near his neck to help her magic flow more quickly.
"I fell down," his voice was tight with what they both knew was a lie.
"What the fuck is with that lie?" She muttered furiously. "Liam and Cooper tried to give me the same one earlier. I can't help well if I don't know what exactly happened." She pursed her lips even if he couldn't see.
"Romanian law, Kai," he groaned softly through the pain.
"Right. Well I'm not a fucking cop. I'm a healer. I'm not going to report anything," she took a deep, calming breath, "How are the others?" She tried to keep the worry from her voice. If he looked this bad, she couldn't imagine what shape the others might be in. She sent a small stream of magic through her hands to cauterize the wounds that were still bleeding. She could only assume that the dragon got him with her claws.
