Kai woke up and was immediately confused. She wasn't in her bed. She assumed that Charlie was going to take her back to her place after breakfast, but this definitely wasn't her bed. She was still fully dressed, and she had been placed on top of the covers. Glancing at her watch, she saw she had been asleep for maybe an hour.
The bed groaned as she climbed off and looked around the room. There was stone fireplace in the corner and wood beams on the ceiling. On the mantle of the fireplace, she noticed a few photos. Oh shit. She was in Charlie's bedroom. While he didn't have any photos in his office or kitchen, there were about six evenly spaced across the mantle.
Kai wandered over and looked at the photos. She couldn't help but snoop. She was so curious about the incredibly private trainer. The first photo had to be a family photo in Egypt, apparently red hair was a family trait. They were all grinning at the camera. The next was of him with one hand resting on the snout of a stunning Norwegian Ridgeback. He had a huge grin on his face, looking at the dragon in admiration. Kai smiled at the photo. She had never seen him that happy, and it was heartwarming.
The next photo caught her eye and she couldn't look away, it was a black and white of a young man. From the facial structure, she assumed it was someone in his family, but she wasn't sure. She looked back at the family photo, comparing; definitely a sibling, wait there were two.. ah the guy in the photo was a twin. Interesting. He was laughing at something past the camera and then turned to the camera and winked with a mischievous glint in his eye. If someone were to scream prankster, it would have been that young man. His smile was infectious and she decided if they ever met, she was going to be friends with him.
"That's Fred," she heard Charlie's soft voice coming from the doorway. He had a look that Kai couldn't place. Something between sadness and a smile.
"One of the Weasley's who invents things?" She had wanted to ask him about that earlier.
"He used to," Charlie closed off with those words. He crossed his arms and pursed his lips, making it clear that he didn't want to have any more of a conversation about it.
"What do you mean he used to?" Kai was smart. She felt like she had put two and two together. He had a sibling who died in the war and Fred "used to" invent things. But she wanted to see if he would open up and tell her.
"Why do you sound like you're just trying to confirm what you know?" He narrowed his eyes at her.
She just shrugged and glanced back at the other photos. One looked like it was from Christmas time, and the other two looked like Charlie with friends from younger days. She desperately wanted to look over each one carefully, but she knew better than to push him. Instead, she walked toward the doorway to go to the living room. He didn't move as she tried to walk past him, forcing her to brush up against him as she passed. His large frame towered over hers as she slipped past. He followed her to the living room.
"Thank you for letting me take a nap. I'm so sorry," she looked down at the ground awkwardly. She didn't know why he let her sleep in his bed instead of hers or on the couch, and she wasn't sure if she wanted to ask.
"I thought it wouldn't look great if I were carrying you sleeping to your place," he shrugged. That made sense. He was always concerned about the optics of things.
They stood there awkwardly for a moment. Honestly, Kai didn't really want to leave. She was a social person and none of her friends were available to hang out with. Kellen had left for Norway and Chelsea and Cooper had gone one a day date somewhere. Even the animals were all busy. She hadn't gotten to hang out with people all week and it had been kind of lonely.
