Kai got to work on the Fire Mite ointment as Charlie left the room. From what she had gathered, most of this month was supposed to be fairly relaxed for the trainers, so she would have time to make the potions necessary to restock her supplies. She just prayed that there weren't any major emergencies because she didn't feel ready. She still needed more gauze and the other medical equipment, which she wouldn't be able to get until this weekend.
She started to chop the ingredients, but got tired of working in silence. She wasn't used to feeling this alone. Normally she would have at least one animal around her that kept her company. She might have to talk to Charlie about getting an office pet. Sighing, she began to look around the room to find something to play music on. Hidden in the back of a closet, she found an old radio.
"Yes!" She triumphantly held it up. Smiling, she headed back to the desk and set it to her favorite muggle music station from the US, making sure to keep the sound low enough to not bother anyone else, especially the tumultuous redhead downstairs.
The sounds of country music drifted into her ears and she closed her eyes for a moment. She had forgotten how much she loved the genre. It wasn't very popular anywhere else in the world, and while she wouldn't change her life for anything, she missed being able to listen to it anytime.
Kai turned back to the ingredients on the chopping block and got back to work, humming the songs she knew quietly to herself.
She didn't know how much time went by before a song came on that put a smile on her face. She couldn't help but turn the music up louder, and sing along as the words poured out of the radio.
Blame it all on my roots,
I showed up in boots
And ruined your black tie affair
The last one to know, the last one to show
I was the last one you thought you'd see there
And I saw the surprise and the fear in his eyes
When I took his glass of champagne
And I toasted you, said, "Honey we may be through
But you'll never hear me complain"
Kai couldn't stop herself from singing along or turning it up a little louder for the chorus.
Cause I've got friends in low places
Where the whiskey drowns and the beer chases my blues away
And I'll be ok
Yeah, I'm not big on social graces
Think I'll slip on down to the oasis
Oh I've got friends in low places
A chuckle caught her attention and she turned to look at Charlie in the doorway.
"I'm so sorry," her eyes widened and she rushed to turn the music down. "It was just too quiet for me to work, and I found the radio and then this song came on, and I just couldn't help myself. It's one of my favorites," her words tumbling out of her mouth.
Charlie just grinned at her, "I've never heard music like that. Turn it back up. You have a nice voice."
She raised her eyebrows. Was he actually letting her have fun? She contemplated whether he was just feeling guilty or if this was a side of him that she just hadn't seen yet. Charlie didn't wait for her to move and pulled out his wand, turning the music up for her.
