Draco sat at the back of the class. He gridded his jaw. I watched him as he concentrated hard on his paper. McGonagall appeared in front of me, checking my work. It wasn't the best; I had been so distracted by him.
He looked from the corner of his eyes. I darted my eyes away from him, looking out the window. The first snow of the year had fallen overnight. Ella had awoken me early to watch it fall. I hated snow; it was wet and cold. I much preferred sunshine, but still, I built a snowman for her.
McGonagall turned away, moving on to the next student. He still kept his eyes on me, no longer finding his paper interesting. I looked over, eyes meeting. A mutual conversation, only my gaze He rubbed the underside of his jaw, running his tongue across his teeth.
I think that in a week's time, I'd be forced into his proximity for a whole night. He looked away first, listening to Blaise's joke. I turned back, facing the front, holding a tight grip on my pen. How could someone be so adoring yet so infuriating?
The class bell chimed, ending the lesson. Thankfully, I was out of there quickly before receiving any odd looks. I bumped past people in the full corridor. My hands fiddled with the strap of my bag. The cold rush of the winter breeze hit my skin.
I trekked across the snowy courtyard, hoping to make it to the hall before it was too late. Across the courtyard, my brother sat on a stone bench. The wind was wisping at his dark hair, his face more paler.
"What are you doing out here, Val?" I asked, stopping in my tracks. My eyes darted to his notebook, which he shut quickly. He gazed up at me, his eyes glimmering in the sunlight.
"I thought it'd be a nice day out." He said, standing and pulling his cloak close, "You know I like the snow."
I hummed, stepping to walk off. But Valentine stopped me, his hand catching mine. He was acting stranger than usual. The circles under his eyes seemed darker, and his hair pulled back. At first glance, he looked unusually normal. I knew this wasn't like him; he had never evolutionary spoken to me before.
"Hey Rura," he started, nibbling at the edge of his lip. "Be careful; you're heading in an odd direction."
"Alright, weirdo, I'm just going to the library club." I chuckled him off and began heading back in the direction I was headed. He rushed forward, stepping in front of me.
"Not that Rura," he groaned, walking backwards. "This whole Draco Malfoy thing, listen, he's not a good guy; do not get involved with him."
"I know he's not a good guy, and I'm not getting involved," I chuckled. He was beginning to make me feel anxious. Valentine had that weird aura about him; he made you timid sometimes.
Valentine's face fell; he wanted to tell me something. But the words on his lips never formed. He only continued to walk besides me. He gazes over his shoulder every moment or so. I couldn't completely understand why he was acting so strangely. He was anxious, like someone had been watching us.
"Val, is everything okay?"
"Aurora, it's just that I'm worried about you," Valentine sighed, gazing behind him again. "The Mlafoy family aren't good people, and I can just see you getting involved with them."
"What do you mean, not good people? Is there something I should know?" My voice cautioned me; I didn't really want to know the answer. If I were being honest, I thought Draco was annoying; he was a pest, but he wasn't a bad person.
If anything, I should be looking at my own family. My father was a shady man; he never told me much of his work. He always had big, extravagant events filled with pureblooded witches and wizards. I knew he had an odd reputation, and then again, I rarely spoke to him.
"Father knows them; he's friends with Draco's dad," he explained quickly outside the hall's entrance. "They're into some bad business; just please, promise me not to be involved."
I hesitated; he wasn't giving me much to promise. But I nodded, and he walked in the other direction. Bad business? Not good people? It wasn't like I really cared; I wasn't close to Draco at all. I didn't even know anything about him.
The hall was empty, leaving me alone with spinning thoughts. I tried to think of every worst possible thing I could. Before Professor Moody hobbled past, His eyes tracked me; I felt watched closely. It seemed like he was checking me for anything suspicious.
"Afternoon Professor," I waved, my smile faker than his eye. He grunted, hobbling over to me. I suddenly felt claustrophobic.
He smelt like an old mould. It was something I wished I could wipe from my senses. His greasy hair fell over his eyes. I smiled awkwardly, looking back down at my mapped plans. He skimmed over them from over my shoulder.
Before licking his lips like a lizard, he spoke, "Speak to your father much."
"No, why?" I puzzled, flipping around to face him. My hands gripped the back of my seat. The thought of my father made my blood boil.
"We used to be friends back when he worked for the ministry," he stated, taking a swig of his bottle. "Until he went rogue, you know, unfortunately..."
"Of course, he must have told you all this. About how he was let out on the offence of giving the ministry his spells?"
