No matter how hard I tried to break the surface, My arms were never strong enough to pull the weights trapped at my ankles. My brother would be by my side; his pain and regret usually dragged him under as well.
If only I hadn't met him. I would have never jumped into the water. My clothes would have been dry, and the weights on my ankles would have been light. It was my fourth year, and some fancy wizard competition had been going on.
My brother and I were always inseparable, bound together by a shared pain and regret that seemed to drown us both. We had grown up in a difficult family situation, and our bond became our lifeline. Whenever I found myself sinking into despair, my brother would be right there beside me, his own struggles weighing him down. Our connection was both a source of comfort and a reminder of the darkness that haunted us.
The sight of Ella's red hair, tucked behind her ears, stood out amidst the sea of faces.I felt a chill go down my spine, and goosebumps popped up on my skin as the icy wind sliced through the air. The air was heavy with the aroma of moist ground and fallen leaves, a signature perfume of autumn. Students were running about and talking all at once in the courtyard, creating a tremendous auditory explosion. Out of all the faces in the crowd, Ella's crimson hair sticking out was the most striking feature. In a last-ditch effort to keep warm, I clutched my coat close, the scratchy fabric pressing against my fingertips.
I wanted to really not be here. Honestly, the wind from the icy autumn hit wasn't exactly pleasant. The boys stared at her with hungry eyes, making me wonder if they knew she wasn't even sixteen. Averting my gaze down to my scuffed shoes, they really needed replacing.
Ella soon ended her little chat and took my arm. She was about a head taller than me, with her lanky legs. Her hair changed into a light pink, and she looked at me with her gaping blue eyes that were filled with joy.
"Alright?" She beamed, her hair returning to its bright red (she was going through a phase).
"No, it's freezing," I stated, pulling back my sleeve to reveal my goosebumps.
Ella gave a chuckle in response, rubbing my arms. We walked together, chatting here and there. Ella Fang is the only person I know who can chat with someone about everything. Together, we went to the great hall, taking seats opposite each other. I gazed down at the table at the rowdy group that always sat in the middle. Two meatheads laughed loudly at a joke no one else got.
I should've looked the other way.
"My Merlin, I've had it up to here with those stupid boys." Ella spat; she despised them, even if Hanuel Mun was her potions and charms partner.
I hummed, my eyes falling on Hanuel. "Well, they aren't all bad."
"Hey, just because you think Hanuel is fit doesn't mean everyone else likes them!"
"I do not fancy Haneul; my brother is friends with him!"
"Even worse..."
I tried to ignore her silly remarks. But Hanuel Mun did have a charm about him. If only he wasn't a friend with that git of a boy. A sad excuse for a person who only thought of himself. He walked around like he owned the whole place. Even if he was insanely popular, I could not stand him.
Draco Malfoy.
"Stop staring like you're going to kill someone!" Ella yelped, slapping my shoulder, her grin wide.
"I just cannot stand-"
"Draco Malfoy, you've said it like ten times this morning..."
I shut my mouth fast; she was right. But I should have kept that attitude for that day. My mouth shut would have helped. I wouldn't have ended up in this predicament if I had. Through the crowd, we waltzed over our entire friend group. Luna spun around like a fairy, her baby blue sweater flinging and hitting Colson. Elizabeth and Layla looked like they were having a very serious discussion.
"Look who the cat dragged in..." Layla sighed, ruffling Ella's hair; her smile was full of mischief already.
"Oh, sod off!" Ella exclaimed, shoving Layla to the side. I myself would not have stood for that.
Layla didn't; she continued to pester Ella for the next twenty minutes. My overgrown boredom was getting worse. Most Tuesday mornings were boring; we had potions first thing, which wasn't all bad. Unless you, like myself, had Professor Snape hating you.
I pulled out a book, my hands still burning from the cold. My friends were an odd bunch; they were loud and couldn't care less what anyone thought. Elizabeth Lupin was the only one in my group who was semi-normal. She peered over my shoulder, her chocolate locks falling in front of her cheeks.
"I read that one last night," she hummed, her rosy cheeks beaming. "It's alright; I mean, the ending is tragically horrid."
Although she was two years older than me, like Colson and Layla, she was one of my closest friends. I flipped the page, the corner cutting the tip of my finger.
"Ouch," I groaned. "Papercut."
Everyone giggled, then quickly returned to their separate conversations. Soon enough, the first clock chimed, class one. I stood and went hand in hand with Ella to Potions. She was still biting down on her banana, her mouth moving faster than her brain.
Whack.
What the fuck? I stumble forwards, gripping Ella's arm. My shoulder stung from the contact, and my attacker was glaring at me like a rabid dog. His ice-like gaze made me feel ten times colder than before. The little, snouty-nosed girl that stood besides him clung to his arm. Acting as if I had just stabbed her.
"Watch it," he grumbled as he looked me up and down.
I stare back, my mouth wide. What a rude argonaut asshat! Ella scoffed, grabbing my arm and firmly pulling me along with her. She seemed more annoyed than I was.
"Merlin I can't stand that dickhead!" I shouted, receiving a few odd looks.
"All that bleach must be rotting his tiny brain," Ella gruffed, smiling at her own comment and nodding in agreement.
If one were for certain, I hated Draco Malfoy. I hated him so much that I would rather die than be close to him. His attitude is so noxious that it makes me want to explode, and the mere thought of his presence irritates me.
I should have really kept that attitude. I kept my mouth shut because what was about to happen would change my life completely.
