I had a plan: turn Draco into the most measurable human. If my presence was so infuriating, so intoxicating, I would simply make him suffer. Ella walked side by side with me, and we waltzed down to the quidditch grounds. She thought it was just so I could 'scope out' Hanuel Mun.
I had the slightest interest in Hanuel; I wanted to make Draco squirm. As we walked up the quidditch ground steps, my stomach twisted and turned. Ella lugged me along and sat down in perfect front-row seats.
"It's weird they still practise; Quidditch isn't even on this year," she commented, pulling out her magazine and circling things she liked. I nodded and watched them hoist into the air.
My eyes darted around, looking for a streak of white. It zoomed past, and then again. I found him; he stopped and looked over at the stands. He noticed me and immediately dove down. He was like a fast sparrow, darting around. I watched him intently, focusing hard.
Soon enough, they had finished, and Ella wished to go back to the castle. She moaned and groaned as I pleaded, and we followed them out. She agreed, reminding me that I was delusional about liking my brother's mate.
"Come on," I encouraged, pulling her along down the steps. "I'm sure Valentine would let us in!"
Ella groaned and followed along; she hid her grin. We stepped into the Slytherin quidditch commons. The team had decked the place out with posters; they placed trophies in a cabinet. A small doorway must have led to the changing rooms. Valentine sat across from Hanuel, laughing at another joke.
"Rura, what are you doing here?" Valentine questioned him. He looked over at his teammates and hushed them. I walked in, and my plan seemed to not exactly be as planned as I thought. Ella, however, came into the clutch.
"Oh, I wanted to talk with you about maybe joining the team."
I looked over at her with a wide mouth, but she just winked and darted her eyes to Hanuel. He stared at me grossly, his eyes soaking up my appearance. A silly blush rushed to my cheeks, and I coughed to clear the tension. Valentine nodded and pointed for her to sit down.
I stood awkwardly in the corner and gazed around. Hanuel appeared in front of me; he was still wet from the post-game shower. He smiled awkwardly at me, rubbing the nape of his neck. I shuffled and made my mouth into a line. Ella gave me a thumbs-up and cocked her head to the side.
"I didn't know you had a thing for quidditch." Hanuel queried, holding his kit in one hand and the other still scratching his neck.
I shook my head and gulped, "No, no, not me; Ella's got a knack for it. Val asked me to bring her along last year, but she was too shy."
He nodded and looked away. A blush appeared on his cheeks. I watched the doorway closely, hoping he would come into the room. After a moment, he did, and Draco waltzed in. He sat down and pulled a water bottle over to him.
I watched him chug it down, the veins on his neck appearing. My stomach twisted into a knot. Merlin was so obnoxious. He looked around and crossed his brows at Ella. Turning to whisper with his friends. They all shared a laugh, and then his laugh flattened when he saw me.
"So anyway, I heard about that Yule Ball; you're planning it?" Hanuel wondered, now blocking out Draco, who sat up straight and watched closely. I nodded and hummed in response, a smile appearing on my face.
"Yeah, it's going to be pretty big," I stated proudly, my hands fiddling with my skirt. I reminded myself to get a new one; I had started to grow out of this one.
Hanuel sighed and looked down at my hands. "No one has asked you yet?"
"Who me? I don't get asked to ball," I chuckled, holding my breath. Merlin, I sound like a groupie trying to get attention. My brain mocked me in my head. What a pick me and choose me, girl.
"A girl as pretty as you, guys, would jump for you." He complimented me, but I wasn't sure if I was being delusional or if he was flirting with me.
Draco pounced up, grabbing his group of snotty friends. They stood behind him like a triangle, which he had probably practised. I looked over Hanuels shoulder, my feet rising slowly. Draco, for once, didn't shoot daggers at me. He instead looked at Hanuel with disgust.
'Notice me; be angry at me; come on, Draco, get angry'
Draco badgered into Hanuel, causing him to stumble. "Sorry, try not to get in the way there, Mun."
"Malfoy, you've got to watch your step." Hanuel grunted, the vein in his temple popping. "Wouldn't you want to fall in front of the pretty girl?"
"You're in my way," Draco shot, his brows twitching. "Wouldn't you want to be in the way of these that are mine?"
I looked between the two boys and felt an absurd amount of testosterone. Was this some kind of weird rivalry? Draco was the competitive type; he wouldn't stop until something was his. He believed he was like an alpha wolf; what he wanted, he got.
"Alright lads," Valentine chimed, popping his head from the couch. "I think we've done enough for the day."
I looked over at my brother, who stared at me. He gave me the same look my mother gave me when I was in trouble. Her eyes looked just like his, and I could feel the fear of being in trouble. I took a step back and held Ella by the arm. We left without another word, and she looked back one more time at the boys.
"What in fucks name was that?"
"I wish I knew!"
