The next morning, you woke up to an unknown alarm.

"Good morning, Miss Y/l/n. It is a sunny Monday morning, with temperatures varying from 13 to 21 degrees Celsius (55 to 69 Fahrenheit). It is currently 6 AM and I was told to wake you up because you have a training session with Agent Hill in 2 hours." explained Jarvis, with some chill jazz music accompanying him.

"Oh thanks, Jarvis," you responded, slightly bamboozled.

You sat up and processed what you just heard. You'd finally be seeing Maria again? A wave of excitement rushed through you as you let that idea sink in.

Those 2 hours passed excruciatingly slow, and you took a mental note to tell Jarvis to only wake you up an hour before whatever happened in the morning because you didn't need that much time to get ready.

Jarvis helped you get to the training area and the moment you saw Maria your breath felt like it got stuck in your throat.

"Uhmm hi..." you said, shyly advancing toward her.

"Good morning, Agent Y/l/n," she responded in an unexpectedly serious tone.

The tension in the air was so thick that it felt like it could be cut with a knife. You couldn't decide whether that was good or bad.

"Well? Do you need a special invitation? Come join me!" said Maria seeming slightly irritated.

Surprised by her manner of speaking, you hurried toward her, not wanting to upset her in any way.

"Do you have any previous experience in hand-to-hand combat?" asked Maria, visibly expecting 'no' as an answer.

"No yeah no," you quickly responded.

She then proceeded to explain the basics of fighting. After a long time of practicing little gestures and Maria pointing out your every mistake, she finally invited you to your first sparring session.
It didn't take very long for her to pin you down, even with her supposedly going easy on you.

"Again," she ordered with a stern tone.

"Why are you acting like you don't even know me?" you asked out of the blue, facing the tension head-on.

"I'm working, and you are too," she responded with a straight face.

"So what, you think a little affection hurts? You really think that I can't keep it in my pants?" you lashed out, frustrated by the distance between you two.

"It's not you I'm worried about... It's me..." she said, getting off of you and sitting crisscrossed in front of you. You mirrored her pose and looked at her while she was trying to formulate her thoughts into words.

"Everyone I have cared for has either died or left me. I don't want the same thing to happen to you. You deserve someone to be happy and safe with, and I just don't deem myself worthy of your time. I got used to being a lone wolf, and it's much safer this way for everyone around me," she explained, her 'confident' facade crumbling down with each word said.

You leaned toward her and kissed her affectionately, cupping her face. She quickly relaxed into the kiss, though you did feel a few tears drip down her face.

"It's risky to love, but it's 100% a risk worth taking. I don't care what will make us part ways, as long as I got to be with you in this lifetime," you declared, after a bit of an internal debate.

A/n - I enjoyed writing this, though I do feel like I can't quite capture Maria's personality. I don't think she'd open up to someone this much upon seeing them the second time, but it is a fictional world so maybe it can be tolerated... Eh well, let us all pretend that it makes sense
