You stormed through the doors and burst into tears when you saw Maria tied to a chair, alone, in the middle of the room. She looked terrible. You were right, they did torture her. A lot. Her face was full of cuts, and her body didn't seem that good either. She wasn't quite passed out, but she surely wasn't far from it.

You couldn't care less. You approached her desperately and kissed her with all you had, pouring in every unspoken word, every emotion you've ever felt in your life, all the pancakes not yet dropped on the floor, every lost and every won battle, every mission you didn't get to go on, every morning you didn't get the chance to spend with her, drinking coffee on the porch as your kid left for school, every evening by the fireplace, knitting next to her old self, all the love you had left to give... Simply everything. And this clarified things a whole lot.

"Will you marry me?" you blurted, positioning yourself on one knee.

"Of course!" she replied in a heartbeat, looking at you with her eyes filled with tears.

"There she is! Get her!" yelled William from the other end of the hallway, surrounded by a group of guards. You could see his eyes clouded by raw anger, and at that moment you realized that he actually believed every second of your game. You couldn't help but feel a little bad for him.

You quickly untied Maria, your hands trembling as you tried to remove the stuff keeping her in place. After managing to free her, you didn't hesitate and picked up Maria bridal style, wow, how ironic, and exited through a secondary door. (I'm imagining this as a comics scene ngl, the door framing you carrying Maria)

You were finally happy, with Maria in your arms, about to live your whole life with her. "'Till death do us part" you imagined the two of you saying to each other, in front of the altar.

You ran as fast as you could through the long hallways, trying your best to find the elevator with which you came here.

You eventually reached the home stretch, the elevator's doors shining invitingly in your direction. You pressed the button, adrenaline coursing through your veins. The guards soon caught up to you, and you couldn't help but feel like a deer in headlights. You pushed the elevator button full of panic, and the moment the doors opened and you stepped into the elevator, you felt the air being knocked out of you. The doors closed, blocking you from any further interaction with the enemies.

You collapsed on the floor of the elevator, noticing a puddle of blood forming around you. Maria quickly stood up and held you in her arms as you sat on the floor, her face full of terror.

"Y/n! No...No...No... Stay with me!" she yelled, trying her hardest to cover your gunshot wound in between sobs.

"Hey... It's ok... You're safe now... Please live, for me. And maybe save the world in the process" you whispered, cupping her cheek covered in tears and now also in blood from your hands.

"I love you, y/n! You're the best thing that's ever happened to me!" she responded, smiling through the veil of tears covering her face.

"'Till death do us part..." you mumbled, closing your eyes one last time.

You weakly heard the elevator doors open, S.H.I.E.L.D. agents awaiting you and Maria on the other side of them.

She was going to be safe. A wave of tranquility washed over you as you released your grip on reality. You wanted a lot: to save the world, make it a better place to live in, marry Maria, live a quiet life with her beside you, and perhaps even adopt a kid. But all this wasn't possible anymore. You were no longer together.

The world was never a safe place for people like you. People who poured their heart into something, dreaming of creating something beautiful in return. In the wilderness of this universe, you were the lamb, forever meant to be barbarously destroyed by the big bad wolves hunting you.
