You find them during a day out with your brother. You were looking for a present for your mom's birthday when you saw them for the first time: two gold rings laid next to each other on a small cushion. You couldn't help but think of Hope the instant you see them.

There were simple bands with different but matching engravings: half a sun and a moon that formed a circle when slotted together. You had glanced past, but something drew your eyes right back, and you found yourself staring. Five minutes later you were still in the same spot when Jimmy showed up at the door, arms full of shopping bags, carrying coffee and a pastry paper bag and yelling for you to hurry up and buy something or get out.

Frowning at your brother's manners (and very maturely sticking your tongue out at him), you waved over the vendor and, trying not to think too much about it, bought the rings. The little bag feels much too heavy in the jacket pocket, and the implications alone are swirling in your mind now. You're munching on a triple chocolate donut and trying not to think about it when the idiot you share blood with elbows your side hard enough to make your coffee cup sway dangerously.

"Come on, Y/N, stop thinking whatever you're thinking and listen to me for a moment, alright?"

Sighing, you turn to look at him to swallow a frown when you find him staring with a cheeky smile in place. That's never a good sign.

"What now?"

"Oh nothing, just wondering who that nice little jewelry bag peeking from your pocket is for." His smile turns teasing and you suppress the automatic urge to duck into a nearby shop as a distraction. "Not for Mom, or you'd have shown me before getting it. So I'd bet it's for that cute girlfriend of yours, hm?"

If you punch him, the donuts will be smashed beyond salvation, and that's the only thing keeping you from giving Jimmy a bloody nose right now. You know it's an overreaction, but you're nervous already as it is, and he's not fucking helping. Some of that must show in your face, because he raises his hands up in the universal sign of surrender, his own coffee splashing over the rim of the paper cup with the motion. You watch the drops stain the already sticky floor of the mall with a sigh, knowing you're gonna end up spilling your guts in a public space yet again.

"I got two matching rings." Your brother's eyebrows rise so comically high they disappear under his bangs, so you hurry to explain. "Not that kind of ring, jackass. Just a sun and moon pair I saw in the store a bit ago. They're pretty, and simple, and they match both our styles."

"Okay. Cute rings for cute girlfriends. Not really seeing the problem here, kid."

You exhale through your nose and take a bite of your donut, taking advantage of his patient expression to gather your thoughts for a moment. As annoying as he can be, your older brother really tries his best to be there when you need him. Even if he starts humming the imperial march while he waits for you to speak.

"I just don't know if she'll like it." A raised eyebrow and more humming. Idiot. "Fine. I'm just worried... What if it's too much?"

"What? The little not-that-kind-of-ring ring is gonna be too much for your Mikaelson girlfriend? A little metal is gonna be what finally defeats her? Oh, if only the world had known that's all it takes to break the mighty tribrid! Man, maybe if Malivore had just given her some jewelry the world would've ended for real."

Jackass.

"You're a jerk, you know exactly what I meant."

You know you're pouting, but you don't care, even as he taps his fingers against your frown.
