She had made it to Friday. It had only been four days since she became a working woman and Lydia had little to report to anyone who asked how it was going. Not like many people were asking. She had spoken to her mom daily who reported out to her dad. She had Facetimed her best friend Kit the night before and spent the majority of their call gushing about the mysterious Jamie Chancellor. She gave Kit the play by play. When she told her about running into Brendan of all people, Kit paused dramatically.
"Don't do that." Lydia knew where this was going
"Do what." Kit asked innocently.
"Do that thing you do."
"I'm just saying."
"Say less."
"I'm just saying, Brendan's always been a great guy. I don't know why you didn't give him a chance." Lydia paused, pretending to think about it.
"Because Brendan is great on paper but there's no oomph. Even worse, he gets all weird when I bring up going out on an actual date. It's like he's afraid to be with me in public or something."
"Lyd, you were sleeping together for a year and as I recall, anytime we went out at school, he always mysteriously showed up at the same place. I highly doubt that man is afraid of anything to do with you. Think about it will you?"
Lydia mumbled a non-committal hmm. Her mind was with someone else already.

Lydia was thinking about texting Brendan and seeing if he was around for lunch. After all, they were friends. She wasn't going to avoid a friend just because she had a new crush. She could text him like a normal person and they could have subpar salads together. That's what most people in her office did anyway.
"Lydia, do you have lunch plans?" Lydia looked up to find Tina hovering above her desk.
"Nope." She pushed away the thought of texting Brendan.
"Great, let's go. Grab your coat." Lydia was relieved to see Bev waiting by the elevator.
"So Lyd, can I call you Lyd?" She didn't wait for a response. "I wanted to get to know you so badly. I've heard wonderful things about you and when Bev said you and her had already hung out, I obviously had to make it happen." Lydia shot a confused look at Bev looked equally as confused. Tina was undeterred.
"And of course, we only got to chat for a few minutes at the party. So, what did you think?"
"Of what?" Lydia wasn't quite sure what she was asking.
"Of him! Tim said you and Jamie were on the patio for quite some time alone." Lydia was mortified. Not only was Tim a gossip but Tina looked like she was going to poison her food.
"He was nice. You know, nothing to write home about." She was lying, she just hoped Tina didn't notice.
"Hm nothing to write home about? He's Jamie Chancellor. I tried to have him. I really did. But now I've sworn off office romances." Bev scoffed as they made their way outside of the building.
"Excuse me, I heard that. What was your harumph for."
"Tina. You, me, and now Lydia along with the majority of our aisle know that your office romance history is lengthy. I don't care who you sleep with just don't pretend you're above dating a coworker.
Tina didn't miss a beat. "Well Bev. I'll have you know that currently, my person is a keeper. He is wonderful and kind..."
"Don't forget filthy rich and married."
