Jill Gibson is an English model and Paul McCartney's second wife. She was previously married to British musician Chad Stuart and was one of America's top models in the 60s.
Early life:
Gibson was born Victoria Gelt Gibson on June 1st 1943 in Cumbria England.
She grew up under strict parental control. Famously, her mother told her she was too young to understand love when she first met Chad Stuart at the Central School of Speech and Drama.
Careers:
After she married Chad Stuart in 1964, Gibson traveled to America with him where people wanted to take snapshots of him and Jeremy Clyde.
The photographer also liked the sight of Gibson's face and took snapshots of her with the duo.
This resulted in Gibson becoming a model and she quickly rose to be one of America's top models. She frequently modeled in New York, but also doubted her appearance.
"I am not actually thin. In fact, I'm a fat girl in disguise. If I manage to look slim, it is only because I am on a constant diet- mostly raw vegetables and fruit, and dare not go near ice cream or malts" Gibson wrote to the public in 1965.
In 1966, she was hired to be a live reference model in Walt Disney's self-manufactured acting camp, Disney Actorville where she met her husband to be, Sir Paul McCartney.
Chad & Jill:
In the spring of 1965, Jeremy Clyde got the starring role in Passion Flower Hotel and Stuart was left alone to perform.
Gibson had a brief singing career with him because of this, recording a cover of Peter, Paul and Mary's The Cruel War.
That was their first and only single together and it didn't even make the top hundred on the charts.
The duo couldn't last anyway as big audiences caused Gibson anxiety.
"I felt sorry for Chad out there all alone and volunteered to join him. But when I got out there and saw five thousand pairs of eyes looking at me, I almost went into shock" said Gibson in 1978.
In the end, overcome with stage fright, she appeared on Shindig! with Stuart and made a quick exit right after they finished the song.
That was the last time Stuart and Gibson performed together.
That is, until late 1966 when they collaborated with another successful duo Sam & Robin.
Gibson and Sam Pan had been working together in Disney Actorville and as policewomen, so they were friends when the collaboration was proposed.
"She was the most active woman you'd ever meet. I met her when she was hosting this singing competition and she was nice to me from then on. Mostly because she didn't know I was the Jill Gibson Chad had constantly warned her about. She had been living with bands for most of her life and had a decent voice in her throat. And, um... Dick Grayson, who I didn't know was Robin at the time, was not a singer at all. So when they made their debut, I was greatly impressed. That's why my feelings were mixed when Chad and I were asked to collaborate with them" said Gibson in 2001.
Sam & Robin had made their debut on The Alan Brady Show, where Chad & Jill made a return after Stuart was begged to sing his version of Cruel War by his current wife and friends.
The two duos were regarded by audiences and many were asking them to collaborate.
So they made a whole LP together titled Holy Caped Collaboration!
That was the official last thing Gibson ever did in terms of singing with Stuart.
Love life:
Gibson was married to Chad Stuart on June 1st 1964 (her 21st birthday).
Their marriage didn't last long as Gibson's stage fright and modeling career was stressing her out so much, she shot a death threat at Stuart.
Chad Stuart felt betrayed by the threat whether Gibson meant it or not and he announced a divorce.
Shortly after making a successful album with Stuart and Sam & Robin, she met the Beatles and became enamored of their bassist, Paul McCartney.
She was told that McCartney had previously done actions that were similar to her threatening Stuart.
The two bonded over their past misunderstandings and love for music and later married in 1967.
McCartney was among many fans of the Holy Caped Collaboration! album. Like Gibson, having been best friends with Sam Pan, he had mad respect for Sam & Robin (although many recall that he hated the duo's cover of the Beatles song I Will.)
Gibson was a humongous Beatles fan and never left McCartney's side when the band broke up in 1970.
Later life and Meg & Jill:
The years went by and Gibson gave up modeling as she was getting older.
However, she remained friends with Sam Pan and Dick Grayson, whom she never knew was Robin the Boy Wonder until the 80s when he told the public.
She lost a great many of her past friends, minus Jeremy Clyde and Meg Murry (Chad Stuart's wife until his death).
Gibson and Murry had always bonded over their love affairs with Stuart, and later over Murry's longtime friendship with McCartney.
After Chad Stuart and both members of Sam & Robin passed away, Murry and Gibson decided to form their own singing group and pay tribute to them.
As Meg & Jill, they frequently perform live singing Chad & Jeremy songs and Sam & Robin songs.
"I was always scared of performing, but I'd lost three of my oldest and dearest friends. I was unable to attend Sam's funeral, Dick was murdered too suddenly to have a proper sendoff and the pandemic stopped me from going to Chad's funeral. So I have to pay my respects in some way. And what better way than to go out there and pay tribute with Chad's wife and Sam's best friend?" said Gibson in 2022.
As she still lives today, Gibson remains dear friends with Murry and Jeremy Clyde as well as actress Patty Lane.
