I’ve never felt this nervous in my life.
I sat at a mahogany brown desk, tapping my fingers impatiently against it. I stared blankly at the notebook in front of me, biting my inner cheek.
Sighing, I looked around the large cavern-like conference room. The air was cool, and still, the air conditioning biting at my fingertips. The room wasn't empty. There were others filing inside, slowing filling the seats scattered around the room.
Whispers floated around the room, secrets being passed about like candy.
Everyone else seemed excited. I mean, assuming they had been working their entire lives to make it to this moment, they are finally somewhat close to what they wished to accomplish.
I, however, was starting to feel sick due to my rogue butterflies bashing against my stomach.
There was a chance, a slight chance, that I may see Quackity today.
Of course, I felt ill.
My crush might arrive.
Crush.
It was such a trivial word compared to what i felt about Alex.
Or maybe it described our relationship perfectly.
Lovey-dovey feelings crushing me in waves ever since I met him.
My heart crushed, shattering into oblivion after he cut all contact with me.
And my emotions at this moment, crushing me until it hurt. Until I felt as if I couldn't breathe.
I hummed, grabbing my pen and clicking it repetitively as I searched the room for a familiar face.
Two people wandered inside the lecture hall, chatting with each other loudly.
One I knew from school. She had dark brown hair creeping down her back, swaying as she walked. She had pretty brown eyes, pale skin, and wore a dark purple hoodie paired with deep blue jeans. She huffed, blowing her hair out of her face and stuffing her hands in her pockets as she neared closer to me along with her friend.
"Hey! You're Wilbur, right?" She said estatically. "I think you go to my school. You know, the one down the street?"
"Uhm, yeah, and you're Jaiden?"
She laughed. "Yep! I didn't know if you knew my name, you aren't very talkative at school." She gestured to the seats next to me, shrugging her back pack straps on her shoulders. "Are these taken?"
I blushed, embarrassed at my awkwardness. "Uh, no. You two can take them."
Jaiden thanked me as she and her companion sitting down next to me.
They waved, grinning at me. "Hey! Friends call me Foolish, nice to meet you." He extended his hand for me to shake, which I did.
He had short brown hair and sparkling brown eyes paired with a nice smile, stuff that could easily make you swoon if you weren't preoccupied... like me. He wore a white t-shirt and black sweats, matched with gold sneakers. He looked way too casual for a law program but it made me wonder if I was overdressed, wearing a white button-up and grey jeans.
"It's nice to meet you too." I glanced at Jaiden and Foolish. "So, you two are planning on doing law?"
"Yeah! I like all of the intricate stuff that's involved with law. And feeling of winning a case has to be golden... right, Foosh?"
He nodded, giggling at the nickname. "I've wanted to be a prosecutor since forever." He grinned, pulling out a notebook from his backpack. "Like, since I watched my first Law and Order episode, I was like "yeah, I could totally do that". I completely underestimated the amount of time that goes into it, but I'm excited!"
"What about you, Wilbur?" Jaiden leaned on her palm, looking up at me, interested. "What got you into law? What hooked you?"
"Oh, well, I..." I paused, losing track of what I was saying, distracted by the familiar beanie in the corner of my eye. "... I'll be right back."
I stood up suddenly, startling the pair sitting down.
"Um, well, we'll be waiting for you. The lecture should start in..."
I quickly walked away, not hearing the end of her sentence. Picking up the pace, I walked to the end of the lecture hall, straight to the corner of the room where a guy stood, placing his blue backpack on the table.
He looked up at me, confused. Then, his confusion turned into shock. He backed away from me, his hair hiding his face but I could recognise those chocolate eyes from anywhere, even in pitch-blackness.
"Alex?"
He blushed, parting his hair with his fingers to look at me. He stared at me as if he was drinking me in. I hoped I looked good in his eyes. I sure didn't feel it. My eye bags, my unshaven face, and abnormally pale skin didn't make me feel attractive.
He bit his lip, looking me in my eyes.
"What are you doing here... Wilbur?"
My jaw tensed. "I... my mom signed me up to take this law program. Extra credits... I'm sure you know that."
An awkward deafening silence.
"Why, Alex?"
Truly, I couldn't understand the question myself. I mean, I could've been asking many things.
"Why did you block me?" or "Why was I fired?".... or
"Why are you ignoring me and acting as if I am a stranger?"
"Why are you pretending as if you don't care about me? Or did you even care to begin with?"
"Why are you such a confusing person?"
"Why am I attracted to you like a moth is to a flame?"
"Why does you leaving me hurt so much?"
"Why am I in love with you?"
He sighed at my singular question, shaking his head and answering me as if he had heard them all. "I don't know, Wilbur."
"You dont know?" I laughed dryly. "Surly, you know why you blocked me on your phone and haven't spoken to me in weeks."
He rubbed his arm, looking down at his scuffed converse. "I can't... we shouldn't be talking right now."
"What? Then when should we talk? After the lecture?" I folded my arms, suddenly mad at him. "Maybe we should stop by a coffee shop so you can tell me why yours closed down."
Quackity paled, inhaling through his teeth. Maybe I shouldn't have said that...
"We can't talk after either. We shouldn't be talking to each other at all." He backed away further, grabbing his backpack as if he was preparing to make an escape.
"Why? What did I do, Quackity?" My voice cracking. "Please, just tell me."
He smiled sadly, slowly walking backwards to another part of the room.
"Nothing, Wil. All you did was just be... you."
And with that, he turned around, walking to the other end of the lecture hall, leaving me to sulk in cold bitterness, feeling completely alone for the first time in a long time...
