Chapter 9: The Wand

The alley was huge, but Severus helped prevent us from getting lost. He was also very helpful when it came to buying potion ingredients and a cauldron at the Apothecary, because I had no idea what to get. We breezed through the shops and finally had one item left on my list.

"I still need..... a wand," I said.

"A wand?" Severus asked, teasingly. "Saved the best for last? Well, it just so happens that one of the best places of wandlore is Ollivanders, right there." He pointed to a dusty old sign. "Why don't you get your wand and I'll meet up with you in a minute. I just have one little thing to do. See you soon!" He left and I pushed open the door. It creaked as I stepped into the old shop that was covered in dust and cobwebs and was badly in need of a makeover. Rectangular boxes lined the shelves, but it seemed as though I was the only one there.

"Hello?" I asked, placing my supplies down on a shelf. I went up to the counter. "Hello?"

I gasped as an old man with white hair down to his shoulders swooshed in on a ladder. His wrinkly face smiled when he saw me.

"I wondered when I'd be seeing you, Ms. Potter,"He said. I guessed this was Ollivander. He stepped off the ladder and pulled out a box. He came back, opening it and handed me a golden wand. I held it, starring blankly, unsure if what I had to do.

"Well, give it a wave!" Ollivander said.

I swished it and a lamp broke, sending shards of glass everywhere. I lept back, embarrassed, and put the wand carefully back in the box.

"Apparently not," Ollivander said. He climbed the ladder and again handed me another wand. This time it was black.

"Perhaps.... this?" He said, hesitantly. I swished it and boxes started flying off the shelves and clattering to the floor. I put it back on the desk.

"No, no, definitely not," Ollivander proclaimed. He disappeared to the back of the store and paused with one box in his hand.

"I wonder," He whispered. He looked at me and slowly made his way back. He handed me the wand and I felt a warmness I couldn't explain. A red wind whooshed around me, sending my black hair flying in all directions. The wind stopped, and Ollivander looked confused.

"Curious," He said. "Very curious."

"Sorry," I said. "But, what's curious?"

"I remember every wand I've ever sold, Ms.Potter. It just so happens, that the unicorn who submitted the hair in your wand has another wand with a similar hair. Just one other. It is curious that you should be destined for this wand when it's brother's owner gave you that necklace. And the necklace seamed to be working properly too, as it should."

"Severus?" I asked. "Severus owned the other wand?"

"Indeed, Ms.Potter,"Ollivander said.

"But how exactly does the necklace work?"

"I'm not exactly sure I'm the right one to tell you that, Ms.Potter," Ollivander replied. "But I can tell you that someone out there loves and cares for you with all their heart."

I smiled as Ollivander walked away, and turned to see Severus standing besides me. He held a white, snowy owl inside a cage.

"Happy birthday, Violet,"He said.

"Wow,"I whispered. As the smile on my face widened, the necklace glowed brighter. But what was the meaning of it? I had to ask Severus.
