The next day I visited Dumbledore's office. I was still heartbroken.

"You said you would keep her safe," I whispered.

"Lily and James put their faith in the wrong person, Severus," Dumbledore replied. "Rather like you. Weren't you hoping Voldemort would spare her? I need you to protect Harry and Violet."

"They don't need protection," I said. "The Dark Lord is gone!"

"The Dark Lord will return," Dumbledore said. "And when he does, Harry and Violet will both be in terrible danger. If you truly loved her....."

"No one can know," I said.

"Then I should never reveal the best of you, Severus?" Dumbledore asked. "Very well. But we will make it clear that you will be risking your life every day to protect them from danger. Violet will need you more than Harry will. We can agree on that. He has her eyes. And she looks exactly like a child you desire."

I nodded. At least there would be another reminder of Lily.

"I will," I said. The deal was closed.
