Chapter 10: The Necklace's Story

After I bought the wand, Severus led me back to the Leaky Couldren and we had lunch. It was time to ask him.

"Severus?" I asked.

"Yes?" He replied.

"This necklace.... what does it mean?"

"Violet, I....." Severus sighed. "Understand this, Violet, because it's very important. Not all wizards are good. A few years ago one of them went as bad as you can go. And his name was......." He dropped his voice to a real whisper so only I could hear. "Voldemort. But you MUST address him as The Dark Lord or He-who-must-not-be-named, or you-know-who. Anyway, it was dark times, Violet. Very dark times. The Dark Lord started to gather some followers. I was one of them."

I gasped.

"But I joined the Order of the Phoenix, an army that Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts, started to try and defeat The Dark Lord,"Severus explained. "The Dark Lord brought his followers onto the dark side. Anyone who stood up to him ended up dead. Your parents fought against him, but nobody lived once he decided to kill them. Lily was your mother. She and I were friends in our school days at Hogwarts. I realized it was much more than just friendship after awhile, but then she met James Potter. He.... was arrogant. He loved her and he stole her away. But I realize now that it wasn't that foolish. I would never have met you if he didn't."

He brushed my hair out of my eyes and I smiled.

"Lily was something special," Severus continued. "But one day.... I lost control. So much that your mother broke our relationship and ran off with James."

"Severus, I get what you're saying," I said. "But what does this have to do with the locket?"

"The locket..." Severus broke off. "The locket glows because... batteries. The locket has batteries."

I smiled again. "Severus, you're a terrible liar," I said. "But I love it anyway." I took his hand and he smiled back.

I had to find out what made the locket glow. I knew it was magic. Not batteries. But why wouldn't he tell me?
