Poppy Templeton had made her way to a specific location.
As she walked up, she almost turned away, but fought the urge to. If she didn't do it now, there was a high chance she would come back. Or even go somewhere else.
She began climbing up and stood on the railing, staring at the dark, still water below.
In the distance, she heard two boys talking.
And then they got louder.
"Hey!" one boy called. "Come down from there."
Poppy ignored him. It was now or never.
She began lifting one foot off the ledge and her hand was suddenly grabbed.
"Hey, you don't have to do this," Blue Eyes said.
Poppy stared at him, saying nothing.
Blue Eyes continued. "I don't know what it is you're going through. But there's always a light at the end of the tunnel."
For the first time, she spoke. "And what if that tunnel is so dark one can't see the light?"
"Then let someone show you. Just please come down from there."
Poppy considered his words, then allowed herself to be helped down.
Blue Eyes smiled. "I'm Colby."
"Poppy."
"This is Sam."
Poppy gave a small wave and turned away.
"Wait!" Colby called. "Aren't you one of the roommates?"
"Moving in soon. But life just... I'll see you around, Colby."
As Colby watched her retreating figure, he couldn't help but want to unravel the mystery of who she was. Clearly she had been through things, and he wanted to find out what. But he had to find a way to do it without pushing lest she come to such a point as what he'd just saved her from.
