The afternoon L.A sun blazed over my head as I stood in line with the rest of the new ensigns. My relatively long blonde hair was in a braid which laid over my left shoulder. I looked down at my new red Starfleet uniform with my crystal blue eyes. I quickly looked back up. I hated red. Reminded me too much of...something that happened.

I scanned the ship that was to be my home for the next 5 years. The U.S.S Enterprise was certainly impressive in size. I had done my homework on her before all the ensigns were assigned. She was made, from my understanding, of duranium and tritanium, some of the toughest metals to be discovered in the 23rd century. She was a heavy, Constitution class cruiser. But for me, she was a getaway ship.

I didn't have happy memories of Earth. So, when I was 12, I began looking to the stars after a Starfleet recruiter came to our school. I was determined to make myself useful to Starfleet one day, so I learned a bit of everything from each of the fields. Job security, y'know?

I was brought out of my examination by the sudden noise of a transporter from inside the ship, and soon, I was met with the faces of six men and one woman, no doubt the Enterprise's bridge crew. The centermost man had dirty blond hair and soft hazel eyes. He gave the air of someone who was in control, and could use his power without becoming a jerk. This I assumed to be our captain, Captain Kirk.

The eyes of all the ensigns were transfixed on Kirk, but I was far more interested in the man to his right.

He was a tall man, of serious bearing. His black hair was as straight as a pencil, and he had perfect whiskey-brown eyes. He wore a light blue uniform, and was looking straight ahead at seemingly nothing. His ears were large, and came to a prominent point.

Vulcan, for sure.

Emotionless, frosty creatures from the planet Vulcan, Vulcans relied almost entirely on logic and reasoning. They never fought, had green blood, and it was impossible for them to lie. That stereotype seemed to be true as I looked at him more intently. He seemed to become aware that someone was watching him, and he slowly turned his head until he met my eyes. I looked away, fussing with my braid, and Kirk stepped up to the front.

"Welcome, new ensigns! Welcome to Starfleet, and to the Enterprise! I am very happy to have you all here, and I am sure you will make wonderful editions to our crew," he opened. Several people were already hanging onto his every word, except for a guy with red hair and his buddy, who were goofing off at the end of the line. Kirk ignored them and continued with his welcome speech.

"The mission of the Enterprise, and of Starfleet, has always been this: to explore strange new worlds, to explore new life and new civilizations, and to boldly go where no man has gone before. I know that all of you will do your best to fulfill this mission, and-" Kirk was cut off by the increased antics of the two guys at the end. A scowl decorated my face. Someone had to stop these clowns.

"Dude, NO! I'm telling you, she was WAY uglier than-"

"Hey, wanna shut up?!" I said sharply. The two took one look at my face and straightened up a bit, though the red-haired one looked a bit more resentful than his friend. Two of the men and the woman on the bridge crew looked at me with impressed looks, and I found my cheeks going pink in spite of myself. Kirk seemed to take the whole situation in good humor, and continued with:

"-and I have no doubt that you will grow in confidence, maturity, and fortitude during your time on the Enterprise," he finished. The Vulcan stepped up.

"All of you are to wait patiently until your name is called by me and report to Captain Kirk, where he will give you your divisions and division chiefs," he said. Even his voice sounded fascinating. Deep, calm, and commanding an air of sophistication. It had an almost hypnotic effect, and I soon found myself straightening my posture automatically while two of the men from the bridge crew set up a makeshift table. One by one, we were called up to the table by name by the Vulcan, and given a division by Kirk.
