When I woke up the next morning, I had one goal in mind: act as normal as possible. Though I woke up early, I waited until precisely 0500 to go to breakfast. I went to mine and Spock's table, as I usually did, and sat with him. He exchanged pleasantries, then remained silent for the whole meal, presumably watching me. I allowed my shoulders to droop a little; I even allowed myself an extra glass of water. Spock's face remained neutral, but I let it slide. I still had Kirk, Sulu, and McCoy to worry about.
When I got to the training room, Sulu announced that today was the day where we were to be given our proper positions on the ship. I was to be assigned to patrol Decks 1 through 7. I noted the straining look on Sulu's face as he gave me my assignment, the look of someone trying to ascertain something. I relaxed my body language a bit, thanked him, and went to my assignment.
As I patrolled the decks, I passed by the Medbay. Luckily, McCoy seemed to be busy and took no notice of me, so I kept on patrolling. The rest of the day was somewhat boring, and lunch was a welcome reprieve from all the walking I had been doing. Spock was, again, silent, but if I'm being honest, I don't really think I would have known what to talk about had he wanted to talk.
After lunch, I started patrol again, starting from the bridge down. Kirk had to walk around a few times to deal with various situations, and I could feel his eyes studying my body language and my facial expressions. I would have snapped at him and told him to look elsewhere, but that would have just given my whole game away, so I contented myself with my patrol.
When my shift finally ended, I went to dinner, then back to mine and Lucille's quarters.
"So, I heard you guys got assigned to your new positions today! How was that?" Lucille asked.
"Kind of boring, honestly. Just walked around a lot. What's new in Medical?"
"Well, Dr. McCoy taught me how to use a hypospray, so that was pretty cool! Not much else, really. I guess we'll get more patients once the mission really takes off. I'm excited!" she said. I smiled. It was good to see her so happy. Eventually, we both decided to turn in. I smiled to myself. It seemed like I did it.
That is, until the nightmare started.
I was on patrol, walking near some of the quarters, when I suddenly became aware of yelling. I frantically looked for the sound, which was coming from Spock's quarters. I scrambled in to see Joshua, who had a gun to Spock's head. Spock was pushing with all his might, trying to get Joshua off of him, to no avail. I ran forward, adrenaline running through my veins, ramming him into a wall and holding him by his shirt, but he shook me off with ease.
"Why are you doing this?" I asked, my voice cracked with fear. His eyes glittered as he gave me a sick, twisted smile, saying nothing. He cocked his gun and pointed it at Spock.
I didn't even have time to push him out of the way.
"SPOCK! SPOCK!" I yelled, running over to him. His eyes, lifeless and vacant, looked at the ceiling, and his green blood trickled slowly out of his mouth and onto the floor. I blinked, and Joshua was gone, replaced by flames. They licked at every corner of the room, caught on every surface. Every single area of the room was blinding shades of red, orange, and yellow.
"SOMEONE HELP ME!"
Nobody came. Nobody ever would. I was alone. Utterly, completely---
"Violet! Violet, wake up! Oh, Violet, please wake up!" I heard a voice call out.
"Violet, please wake up!" I heard Lucille's voice say. I grabbed at her, feeling the warmth of her hands. The lights were turned on, and my eyes slowly began to adjust. I made out the forms of Spock, Kirk, McCoy, and Sulu. Kirk, McCoy, and Sulu all had concerned expressions on their faces. Spock's face was straight and emotionless, but I thought I could see something like...apprehension in his eyes. It was he who broke the silence.
