DANI GRASPED STEVE'S FOREARM as the two made their way down to the basement. A surge of warmth coursed through him, but it was fleeting as she quickly pulled away, her hand finding the cold railing of the basement stairs instead. Steve swallowed hard, clearing his throat to get his attention. He stopped on the staircase, turning to face her, his voice barely a whisper. "I'm really sorry."
The redhead carefully placed her foot on the next step, meeting his eyes with a mixture of surprise and uncertainty. "Sorry? For what?"
"For everything," Steve confessed, his voice tinged with regret. "The stuff with Nancy, the party, even bringing you into this. I'm just—" He gestured vaguely deeper into the basement, his frustration evident as he sighed. He watched as Dani's expression softened, her gaze dropping to the wooden step beneath his feet. Steve's hand ran through his hair, a nervous habit, as he struggled to articulate his feelings. "I'm just sorry for all of it."
