AS THE ENGINE ROARED beneath them, propelling them down the ribbon of road, the tension in the car began to rise with each passing mile. Billy seethed at the younger Mayfield, grumbling about her tardiness and taunting her newfound affection for the town. Hawkins was by no means better than their sunny city of San Diego, but a sense of belonging was starting to take place in both of the girls' hearts.
"It's not that bad, Billy," Dani gently commented, attempting to ease the situation. She felt a twinge of hope as she considered the possibility that Max had made a few friends in town. The thought brought a soft smile to Dani's lips, one that was shared with her sister through the side-view mirror. At the press of the ignition, a subtle shift in the air betrayed Billy's displeasure at Dani's agreement. In response, the redhead instinctively clenched the seat, turning to face her stepbrother. Her eyes remained fixed on him, unwavering and determined, even as his face morphed into a sinister grin.
