Yeji backed away from shock as she dropped her rapier to the ground. All her senses went numb as only ringing was heard in her ear.
The clashing sound of her weapon hitting the metallic ground didn't make her come back to her senses. She was engulfed by pure shock and bewilderment.
She dropped to her knees, not believing what her eyes were showing to her. Laying across from her, the now unmasked demon that she tried to eliminate was none other than her brother.
"Hyunjin..." She whispered into the air. She shook her head, trying to take the image of her presumed dead brother laying right in front of her.
She thought her eyes were playing tricks on her. That, because of her dream earlier, she's seeing her brother. No matter how she convinced herself she knew deep down what was happening.
Tears began to fall from her crescent-fallen eyes. Her heart shattered with every beat. Everything became nonsensical to her. She had been lied to.
She was told that her brother had died because of demons that fooled him. He trusted in them, and that was the reason for his unfortunate demise.
She'd been told over and over again that his brother was never coming back. Only to be seen in her memories.
After losing their parents so suddenly, Yeji only ever had her brother as family. But when that disaster struck, she felt as if she was alone in the world.
She had her friends of course, but it isn't like how she had with her family.
She swore to herself that she will be better, and bring justice to her parents and brother. She will smite every demon to come her way and rid the world of their evil influence.
But when she saw her brother turned to the side she swore to destroy, her resolve began to crumble. She was split between her duty as an angel, and her love for her family.
Far away footsteps began to fill her ears as the three other angels walked in to see if everything was alright. Yeji was taking too long and they got worried.
"Hey Yeji? Are you okay?" Chaeryeong asked, slowly walking towards the dominion. She saw her friend kneeling on the ground, having a distant look on her face as she faced the demon.
She looked at the evil spirit and gasped at the image. She immediately went up to Yeji and hugged her tight. She knew she needed someone to lean on at the moment.
Lia followed suit once she knew what the situation was. Her heart was feeling heavy for Yeji. She knew how hard it was for Yeji to lose someone she leaned on and looked up to.
"Hyunjin..." Felix muttered under his breath, looking at the demon's maskless face. There were some scratched and burn marks but it was still recognizable for the freckled-faced.
"What do we do now?" Lia asked after a moment of silence. She looked around at her friends who were as equally lost as her.
Yeji, who was being comforted by Chaeryeong and Lia, finally stood up after a long period of debating in her mind. She finally settled on what to choose between her duty and her heart.
"We're not finishing this task with his blood on my hands." She said with confidence in her voice. The three looked at the angel with worried and concerned eyes.
If they didn't finish their mission then the heavenly court would dub them as joining the demon's side. Heaven's punishments were far worse on those who sympathize with evil spirits.
"Okay, but we can't just let him go. What will heaven think of this?" Felix asked as he tried to understand Yeji's thinking process.
"I'll talk with the higher ups to let him have another punishment rather than death." She went closer to Hyunjin and blew a power-like substance on him.
