Chapter 20: Without You

Nico got to visit Jason at certain points. After his surgery, before and after his time's outside, and during visiting hours. Jason would always grin when Nico walked in, and they would sit and talk about absoluteness nothing, ignoring the fact Jason was supposed to graduate in about 4 weeks, and Nico needed to be studying.

"So! How are you today?" Nico asks, false cheeriness lacing over the Worry. Jason shrugged, and then winces.

"Been better. My stomach has stopped hurting, except when I move too much. As far as I understand, I'll have a scar there." Jason smiles, and Nico sighs, shaking his head.

"You had a near death experience, and you're excited about your stupid glass, stab wound scar."

Nico smiled, and reached for Jason's hand. The blonde smiled back at him, his teeth shining and white. Nico found himself wondering what he would have done if Jason had died.

"Nico? Sweetie, wake up, it's time for Jason to go outside, and you need to study."

It was sort of funny that the nurses were by now so well acquainted with the boys they knew their schedules.

"But...Nurse Eren...."

She shakes her head, gently patting Nico. "You may bring your books outside, if you wish. Bianca brought them with her today, come on boys." She smiled, and gently helped of his bed. He winced, and NIco immediately was at his other side, helping him along.

"Thanks." JAson mutters, looking over at Nico. He smiles and helps him along, kissing his cheek every so often. The tall blonde bites his lip and stares down at Nico. He still couldn't comprehend why Nico had said yes. There had been many nights when Jason woke up to Nico's head on his chest, fingers gently tracing the spot where his stitches were. Jason would then take Nico's hand in his and kiss it, making Nico look up with tired, bloodshot eyes.

It had been moments like that Jason had wondered such things.

Nico was supposed to be studying the pregnancy cycle of woman. He was supposed to be adding and subtracting fractions via the method of ...something, he doesn't pay that close attention in math. He was supposed to be studying anatomy of humans.

Well, he was doing that last part. Just not in the way that schools would appreciate.

Jason was jogging. Nico was watching him, smiling a little half smirk, and had his pencil bouncing up and down on wood of the table. Jason's nurse was sitting beside him, so he tried to keep himself under control. Jeez, with the way he looked now, Nico may end up getting his second boner sitting on that uncomfortable bench....

"Mr. di Angelo, you aren't studying."

He jumped, and then blushed, shyly looking at Nurse Eren. She was smiling over at him, watching his eyes.

"S-Sorry." He mumbles, burning red and opening his book. He stares at the words, trying to concentrate through his haze of embarrassment. Jason didn't notice, thankfully. That would've been embarrassing, having to explain to Jason that watching him covered in sweat, panting, concentrating, made him-

"Mr. di Angelo."

He started to read.

Jason was sitting beside Nico, leaning on him, when Reyna walked over.

"How's it going?"

 Nico murmured something uncomprehending, watching her sit in front of him.

"Fine. Jase was exercising. I was studying."

Reyna nods, looking at the blonde who was being supported by Nico, and then sighs.

"You been feeling better?"

"A bit." Jason murmured in response, his eyes drooping closed. "Been better."

"Oh, I know. How did you even get into the accident."

Jason was still fuzzy on the details himself. All he remembered was a deer in the road, and then he was on a stretcher. Nico had shown his the texts he'd sent, but he didn't even remember sending them...

"Jay, you with us? We'd better get you inside..." Nico stood, dragging Jason upwards, and then towards the doors. 

Jason sighed and followed.

The rest of his time in the hospital, Jason worried. Worried about graduation, about Nico, about school, hell, about Percy.

You could tell what he was out of the loop by worrying for the boy who hated him. HE worried about Nico's ex boyfriend, which scared him. 

"Hmm..."He sighed a little, shaking his head. Nurse Eren looked at him, and then blinked. 

"You alright, kiddo?" She murmured, sitting beside him. He nodded, blinking at her. 

"I'm fine, Eren. Just....stressed out. I'm supposed to graduate next week..." 

The nurse smoothed out the sheets around Jason, frowning, and nodded. She understood how he felt. "It seems Nico is stressed out about it like you."

Jason hadn't seen Nico in a while. He had left one day and simply never come back. He was sad about it.

"Really?" He mumbled, staring at the ceiling. He often imagined little patterns swirling into it. He closed his eyes.

Eren smiled, nodded, pet his head, and then walked to the door. "Yes. Now, if you need anything, please don't hesitate to ask."

"alright. Thank you, Eren."

She smiled, tapped her nails on the wood, and walked out with a quiet hum.
