Friday

"Hey." Hunter greets me in the hallway as he puts an arm around me.

"Hi." I yawn and continue walking towards the lunch table.

"Damn," Stella looks at me with a worried expression once I sit down.

"What?"

"You look like you slept a whole thirty minutes last night."

"Thanks," I laugh, "that's actually true."

"What? Why?"

"I just couldn't go to sleep last night." I lie.

"Do you have insomnia?" She jokes and I sarcastically roll my eyes at her.

"No, dork, I just didn't go to sleep until like three in the morning."

"Shit, man." She throws a fry in her mouth and I begin eating my hamburger.

"Hey, Hunter?" A tiny, sophomore girl with red hair comes up to our lunch table a few moments later.

"Hey, Izzy." He smiles at her and turns around in his seat to face her.

"Hey, uh, I was wondering what you wanted to do for our project in chemistry?" She shyly asks as we all stare at her.

"Well, we could do-" Just as I'm about to listen to his answer, I feel a tap on my shoulder. I turn my body to the left and see Tracy.

"Oh, God, what is it?" I groan and she fakely smiles at me.

"Can you tell your friend, Jack, to come sit with you guys and to stop flirting with Millie so I can have my seat back?" Her hand gestures behind her, making me focus on her table where Jack is sitting next a blonde sophomore and whispering in her ear as she giggles.

"Why me?" I ask.

"Because, you seem to know him."

"We aren't like best friends or anything."

"Whatever, he was sitting at your table all week and slept at our house last weekend; can you please just text him at least?" Her arms cross over her chest as she lets out an annoyed sigh.

"Fine." I grab a slice of my orange and look around the cafeteria, making sure no teachers are looking. When I realize they aren't, I throw the orange and it hits Jack in the neck. He furrows his eyebrows together and looks directly at me.

"What the hell?" He mouths to me and I laugh along with Stella and Tracy.

"Come here." I gesture for him to sit at our table and he groans.

"I'm busy." He mouths again, pointing at Millie, who's texting on her phone.

"Just get your ass over here." I pat the empty seat next to me and he finally gets up, whispering something in Millie's ear.

"Thank you." Tracy says and retorts back to her sophomore friends.

"What's up?" Jack places his arm around my shoulders once he sits down.

"My sister wanted her spot back, and Millie is fifteen, so I 10/10 would not hit that unless you want jail time, Gilinsky." I shrug and Stella lets out a snort.

"Whatever." He smiles at my joke and squeezes my shoulder.

"Okay, thanks Hunter, see you in chemistry!" The tiny, sophomore girl says happily before leaving our table.

"Your partner is a tenth grader?" Sammy laughs and Hunter flips him off.

"Whatever, man, the teacher assigned partners and I got stuck with her."
