In the Lanshi, Lan Qiren read all three-thousand rules aloud, noting that it is evident that some visitors did not read them. The faces of everyone in the room started to grow dark, listening to it.
Wei Wuxian, who had by hearted all the rules by now, was bored to death so he look around the room for anything interesting. His gaze flew everywhere, and landed on the side face of Lan WangJi. He was shocked as he saw concentration and seriousness that were nothing like a façade, "How can he listen so attentively to something so boring?" A smile spread on his cheeks.
Lan Wangji could feel Wei Wuxian's eyes on him. He tried to ignore it but it was inevitable and at last he gave in, turning his head a little to meet his husband's eyes.
Their eyes met for a split second and Lan Wangji instantly pulled his faze away, blushing, for Wei Wuxian was eyeing him in a way that Lan Wangji could not comprehend. His heart throbbed in him.
As Lan Qiren suspected, Wei Wuxian was not paying attention to him. He fumed inwardly and was curious on what has captured this Young Master's attention and to his surprise, it was none other than Lan Wangji!
"Wei Ying." He called out.
Wei Wuxian jerked up and answered, "Here."
"Let me ask you. Are yao, demons, ghosts, and monsters the same things?"
Wei Wuxian smiled, "No."
Wei Wuxian could feel Lan Wangji's eyes on him and he itched to seem all perfect and to be all knowing.
"Why not? How are they differentiated?"
"Yao are formed from living, non-human beings; demons are formed from living humans; ghosts are formed from dead humans; monsters are formed from dead, non-human beings."
"'Yao' and 'monsters' are often confused. What is an example that distinguishes the two?"
"That's easy." Wei WuXian pointed at the viridian tree outside of the room and replied, "For example, a living tree was tainted with the energy of books, cultivated into a conscious being, and causes mischief, it would be a 'yao'. If I took an axe and cut it in the middle, so that only a dead tree-stump was left, and then it cultivates into a being, it would be a 'monster.'"
Wei Wuxian could feel Lan Wangji's eyes on him get intense and he side glanced him. As expected, Lan Wangji was attention was on him, totally. Wei Wuxian felt a surge of pleasure to know that he had Lan Wangji's attention and he did not know why but he just wanted to tease that stoic face badly. Giving a quick glance at Lan Qiren who was humming in approval, Wei Wuxian turned to Lan Wangji and winked at him. His eyes widened when Lan Wangji turned red beneath his collar that he could see from standing and laughed inwardly! Lan Wangji was such a fuddy duddy!
Lan Wangji could not take this teasing anymore. He wanted to excuse himself from the class and wanted to hide in the Jingshi. His heart was beating fast and Wei Wuxian would not just leave him alone!
Still not satisfied, Lan Qiren rattles off a series of questions, all of which Wei Wuxian answers correctly.
"What was the profession of the progenitor of the Qinghe Nie Sect?"
"A butcher."
"The heraldry of the Lanlin Jin Sect is a white peony. Which type of white peony is it?"
"Sparks Amidst Snow."
"Who was the first in the cultivation world to focus on the rise of his clan rather than his sect?"
"The progenitor of the Qishan Wen Sect, Wen Mao."
Lan Wangji was very proud of his husband. He knew that Wei Wuxian must be knowing all the answers but still, just how others looked at Wei Wuxian as if he some sort of god, made him feel very proud, despite the rule being that pride is not allowed.
Lan Wangji looked up at Wei Wuxian and to his surprise, Wei Wuxian was looking at him. Their gaze met and Lan Wangji smiled at his husband, to let him know that he was doing good. Wei Wuxian smiled back. It was really heat warming.
Still not satisfied, Lan Qiren then asks Wei Wuxian a question regarding the proper way to handle an executioner's resentful ghost. As Wei Wuxian ponders his answer, Lan Qiren commands Lan Wangji to answer for him.
Lan WangJi did not look at Wei WuXian. He nodded to indicate respect and spoke in a monotonous voice, "First, liberate; second, suppress; third, eliminate. The initial approach is to utilize the gratitude of his relatives and grant his dying wish, set free what he could not let go of. If it fails, suppress it. If the crimes were extremely wrongful, and its energy of resentment..." Lan Wangji was cut off.
"What 'extremely wrongful' and 'energy of resentment'? All these are just bunch of nonsense! Till today, I finally know that, it's so hard to step into the Lan Clan's house."
An unfamiliar voice came through the room and everyone whipped their head towards the entrance. And their stood Wen Chao, the Second Master of Wen.
"Wen Chao, what brings you here? In hundreds of years, you have never joined us in this event." Lan Qiren questioned.
"You are wrong. I am here to congratulate and to convey the blessings of His Excellency to the newly married couple. Moreover, we Wen's never learn from others. We only teach others." Wen Chao replied.
Lan Wangji glared and clutched his Bichen tight. He would never tolerate his clan being insulted. But before he could unsheathe his sword, Wei Wuxian signalled him not to and Lan Wangji nodded. He too did not want to cause any unwanted problems.
"Well," Wei Wuxian interrupted. "Such being the case, tell Your Excellency that his blessings were well received."
"Who the hell are you?" Wen Chao barked.
"Let me tell you." Wei Wuxian replied, "I am Wei Wuxian from the Yunmeng Jiang Clan."
"How dare you chip in?"
"My husband, Lan Wangji, was answering to Master Lan Qiren, how dare you shout and wrangle?" Wei Wuxian hissed.
Whispers and mutters began to spread soon.
"Did he just call Lan Wangji his husband? Did I hear it right?"
"I thought he did not like the marriage. But he openly confessed Lan Wangji as his husband."
"They are so sweet. I envy Lan Wangji."
Wei Wuxian smiled at the whispers and looked at Lan Wangji, who pulled away his gaze, his ears turned red. His heart swelled!
